Six years and two hit singles later, the band is part of a long- awaited and potentially lasting musical trend — the rising pop ularity of Texas bands. Tonight, a trio of top Texas bands will grace the Music Hall in Austin as part of a lengthy national tour — The Butthole Surfers, Reverend Horton Heat and the Toadies. In a recent phone interview, Lisa Umbarger, the Toadies’ bassist, spoke of the overdue success of Texas bands, includ ing the Toadies. “The Texas music scene is fi nally getting noticed,” Um barger said. “It should’ve been noticed a long time ago.” The rise of Tripping Daisy, Deep Blue Something and the Toadies have been compared to the rise — and subsequent fall — of the Seattle music scene in the early ’90s. Um barger said she is confident the diverse Texas bands will display more longevity than the Seattle scene. “I don’t think we’re going to get labeled like Seattle because there isn’t one ‘Texas’ sound,” she said. “It’s not a grunge thing. There are so many bands with different sounds.” Like most bands, the Toad ies’ road to success was not al ways smooth. Umbarger and lead singer/guitarist Todd Lewis worked together at a record store. Lewis had ex pressed an interest in starting a band and approached Um barger since they had similar musical tastes, Umbarger said. “He (Lewis) asked me if I could play bass, and I couldn’t,” she said, “so he got a bass and taught me how to play. The rest, as they say, is history.” Umbarger said the band played all of their early dates in Fort Worth rather than in Dal las, which is more music-orient ed, because the line between the Fort Worth and Dallas mu sic scenes was strongly drawn at the time. “Dallas was cliquish at the time,” she said. “If you were from Fort Worth, you had a hard time playing in Dallas. If it wasn’t for Trees (the Dallas club), we wouldn’t have broken in Dallas.” The Toadies grew in notori ety and success, but never toured until its first major-la bel album, Rubberneck, was released. Umbarger said the members’ other obligations kept them from leaving the Dallas-Fort Worth area until success was thrust upon them. “We never toured until we were signed, because we all had jobs and were in school and couldn’t really leave,” she said. The Toadies have become immensely popular over the last year, thanks in no small part to the success of its song “Possum Kingdom” on the radio and, eventually, on MTV.
