Page 6 • The Battalion Aggielife May 3, 1996 Life gains meaning through knowledge, hope and faith I may just be clearing my conscience, but some part of me really cares about people. I want to stand up and scream and preach hell-fire and damna tion when I see people wast ing away because of their own self destruction. Tuesday night, a train Alex Walters passing through town hit a pedestrian, killing him. After the paramedics arrived and evaluated the scene, the unofficial conclusion was that it was a suicide. Our WEB address is: http://www.ipt.com NO PASSES OR SUPERSAVER ACCEPTED ON THIS FEATURE !£l all of us choose to give up in such a dramatic manner, but it seems like everyone is giving up in some way or an other. I see drunkenness and mediocrity and peo ple working hard just to make money and be powerful members of the community. I hate to burst any bubbles, but these things are meaningless. The best things, however cliched and melodramatic, are the things that I cling to the most and hope to celebrate with my last breath: hope and faith. The power of those words keeps me from giving up on this dying world. Robert Johnson, the greatest of all the delta bluesmen, sang about how “blues falls down like hail,” and all semester I’ve hint ed about my own depressions — like I’ve said before, living can get to be an ordeal of pointlessness. We’re all questing to find a reason for being. Frankly, if you believe that life is just .the result of a bilhon years’ worth of acci dents and evolutional luck, you’re a fool. Even if the human race is an accident, we’re here now. How can people spend 70 or 80 years just getting by and just exist ing? When you die, you die and what’s left after that? The memories? The knowledge and wisdom gained over a lifetime? Meaningless, meaningless — nothing but chasing after the wind. The knowledge one gains is a tool to teach the weak and the young. So use it now, because you may not be here tomor row. When you look back on your life in general or the parts of your life that meant something (such as the days here at A&M) the reflections will tell you that it was worthwhile or that it was for nothing. It’s something we all have to face, our own personal judgments of ourselves. Think about it. “I ask you Lord why you enlightened me, without the enlightenment of all my folks. He said ’cause I set myself on a quest for truth and He was there to quench my thirst. But I am still thirsty.” — Speech.
