McDonald’s serves up remedy for falling sales The new Arch Deluxe, in response to stiff competition, will make its debut at stores on May 9 CHICAGO (AP) — Memo to those who think two all-beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame seed bun are not enough: McDonald’s Corp. is planning to cook up an even snazzier burger. With two kinds of mustard, yet. In a new shot at its competi tors and a bid to widen appeal to adults, the fast food giant plans next week to unveil a bacon, let tuce and tomato hamburger called the Arch Deluxe. The quarter-pound hamburg er will make its debut nation wide May 9 with a cross-country media blitz featuring print and television ads and events in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, according to a source familiar with the product who requested anonymity. The bun will be made with potato flour, the hamburger meat will be seasoned, and on top of it there’ll be lettuce, toma to, cheese, onion and a sauce of Dijon and stone-ground mus tards and mayonnaise. Bacon will be optional. The fast-food giant, based in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook, is seeking to pull more adults into its stores amid stiff domestic competition and slug gish U.S. food sales. McDonald’s posted one of its smallest quarterly profit increas es in years last month. Sales at U.S. stores open at least a year, an industry standard for mea suring performance, fell for the first time. Rivals such as Burger King and Wendy’s have had bacon hamburgers as a menu staple for years. Farther down the line, Mc Donald’s also plans a bigger fish sandwich and a deluxe chicken sandwich featuring what an in ternal memo calls “more chicken flavor,” the Wall Street Journal reported today. “To the degree that kids want to be at McDonald’s, adults will want to be at Mc Donald’s as a result of this ef fort,” the source said. The nation’s No. 1 fast-food chain declined to confirm details of the burger or its nutritional content pending the formal an nouncement. The Arch Deluxe will mark the first major product introduc tion since McDonald’s launched the McLean Deluxe reduced-fat hamburger in 1991. That one flopped. (AP) — A 10-year-old boy whose lawyer used the Prozac defense was convicted of assault and kid napping Thursday for aiming a shotgun at a deputy who brought a truant officer to his home. Police said the fourth-grad er used his 3-year-old niece as a human shield during the seven-minute standoff with a sheriff’s deputy in February. “I’d sooner shoot you than go to school,” the boy shouted, ac cording to police. The boy was found guilty in Juvenile Court of aggravated assault, armed kidnapping and criminal mischief. He could be held in a juvenile de tention center until age 21. The boy’s lawyer, Ellis Ru bin, had claimed the young ster was in a drug-induced trance caused by the antide pressant Prozac during the standoff. Rubin did not imme diately return a telephone call for comment. The boy’s mother said he re sponded well to the drug at first, after a visit to a psychia trist in January. But when the boy’s dosage was increased, he had violent mood swings. This was the first known court case to involve a child using Prozac, which is the world’s largest-selling antide pressant, with sales of more than $1 billion a year. The drug’s success has been cloud ed by claims it can cause mood swings and suicidal thoughts in some people. Lawyers have presented the use of Prozac as a defense in 66 criminal court cases, but none have been successful, according to the drug’s maker, Indianapo lis-based Eli Lilly & Co. Rubin also used Prozac in his 1991 “nymphomania de fense.” In that case, he claimed that Prozac drove housewife Kathy Willets to prostitution. He lost the case.
