For** Page 9 • The Battalion Hey Jimmy Johnson, draft Tommy Thompson, draft my best friend Leeland W ell, the NFL Draft begins Sunday, and I bet everyone is go ing to stay home for this ex citing event and watch ESP N’s camera cover every move. I know I am because one of my favorite people, Jimmy Johnson (and not just be cause he is a carbon copy of my dad), is going to be back in action drafting for the Miami Dolphins. Before this year, I only liked Miami for their fresh spring colors and cool mascot, but now I guess I will become a die-hard fan. Heck, if Jimmy Johnson can take a 1- 15 season with the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 and turn in into back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1993 and 1994, then he can definitely make a change for Miami. When asked about his feelings on the upcoming draft, Johnson admitted, “It’s like we are going into battle being on the sideline on game day.” I don’t know about you, but I am excited for him and hope that he picks up some pretty decent players. Maybe he can reverse the Dolphins’ season of 9-8 last year to maybe all-5 this year. It is almost like he was made to be a coach to take rusty teams to the championship. Despite the fact that the Dolphins are slotted to pick 20th in the first round — which could mean that the draft could be four hours old before Johnson makes a se lection — he still feels he can pick up some good talent. Word has it that even Florida has draft fever, and has forgotten totally about the playoff fights that the Panthers and Heat have been involved in as well as the new start of the Marlins’ baseball season. I am even impressed that sports talk shows around the state spend their time talking about Jimmy Johnson and foot ball. Although some of you sports fans beg to differ, Johnson is one of the most level headed pro football coaches around. He knows who will help his team even though his picks are often not anything great to talk about. Not only does he research the players he has in mind, but he also takes months of preparation to talk to scouts, position coaches, strength coaches and trainers, watches hours of film, and attends work outs to assess prospects in person. Some other coaches could give two hoots about spending this much time for their team. I was delighted to hear that one of Johnson’s prime candidates, who was list ed in the Associated Press, was our very own running back, Leeland McElroy. Wouldn’t life be great if McElroy and Johnson were from the same team? Gosh, I don’t think I would miss a game. I had a hard time dealing with the fact that Johnson was leaving the Cowboys, but I guess it makes things all better knowing that he will be coaching again. No DWI’s, PiseP Ray Sheppard led the way with two goals and an assist MIAMI (AP) — Ray Sheppard had two goals and an assist as the Florida Pan thers, playing the first playoff game in franchise history, beat the Boston Bru ins 6-3 Wednesday night in the opener of their Eastern Conference playoff series. Goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck had 42 saves while Stu Barnes and Robert Svehla each had two assists as the Pan thers humbled the Bruins, who are mak ing their 29th con secutive playoff ap pearance. The Panthers scored three goals iaa 67-second span in the first period, and then made the most of Boston penalties to keep momentum going their way. Rick Tocchet had two goals for Boston — each assisted by Adam Oates and Ray Bourque. The Bruins outshot Florida 45- 30 but were their own worst enemy. Game 2 won’t be played until Monday at Miami Arena. The long delay is due to three Garth Brooks concerts and an NBA game at the Panthers’ home. Florida balked at playing the second game sooner in Boston, and it was easy to see why as the team came out fired up before its home fans. The Blackhawks rolled past the Flames, 4-1 CHICAGO (AP) — Joe Murphy, coming off a disappointing regular season, opened the play offs with two goals and an assist as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Calgary Flames 4-1 Wednesday night. The Flames held Chicago to five goals in go ing 2-0-2 against them this season, and theyll try to recapture that defensive form in Game 2 on Friday. The best-of-7 series shifts to Calgary for games Sunday and Tuesday. Sheldon Kennedy scored 3:23 into the game but that was it for the Flames, who haven’t won a playoff series since beating Montreal in the 1989 Stanley Cup finals. After netting 23 goals in the lockout; shortened 1995 season, Murphy had just 22 in 70 games this season. He also was the Blackhawks’ only regular with a minus rating in plus-minus statistics. Washington overcame a four-goal deficit in the win PITTSBURGH (AP) — Todd Krygier scored twice during an improbable four-goal Washington comeback and the Capitals over came two Petr Nedved goals in 11 seconds to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-4 Wednesday night in Game 1 of their playoff series. The Capitals, the second-lowest scor ing team left in the playoffs, scored the final five goals after the heavily favored Penguins opened a 4-1 lead. Backup goal- tender Olaf Kolzig shut out Pittsburgh for the final 28:51 after Jim Carey was lifted as the Capitals beat the Penguins in Game 1 of a playoff series for the fifth consecutive time. Pittsburgh rallied from the first-game losses to win three of the teams’ other four series since 1991. The Red Wings have not won the Cup since 1955 DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings, seeking their first Stanley Cup since 1955, scored three goals in a 2:21 span of the third period and beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 Wednesday night in the first game of their Western Con ference series. Kris Draper, Vi- acheslav Fetisov, Greg Johnson and Paul Coffey scored for Detroit, which won an NHL-record 62 games during the regu lar season. Alexei Zhamnov scored for Winnipeg. Game 2 in the best-of-7 series will be played Friday night at Joe Louis Arena. MSC FILM SOCIETY PRESENTS.
