Page 8 • The Battalion Wednesday • April 3,1996 VVednesda Baseball salaries up again, average up to $1,176,967 Roberts: I did not betray Irvin Detroit first baseman Cecil Fielder is once again the highest-paid player at $9.2 million per season. NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball salaries are nearly back to their level before the strike, and Detroit’s Cecil Fielder again is the highest-paid player at $9.2 million. The average salary was $1,176,967 on opening day, according to a study released Tuesday by The Associated Press, an in crease of 9.9 percent from opening day last year, when the average was $1,071,029. In 1994, the last season before the 232- day strike, the average was $1,188,679 on opening day, just 1 percent higher than this year’s average. Total payroll was $902.26 million, 1.1 percent higher than the $892.15 million to tal at the start of the 1995 season. The New York Yankees had the highest payroll at $52.9 million, followed by Balti more at $49.4 million, Atlanta at $47.9 mil lion and Cleveland at $46.2 million, up from $35.1 million. The Indians already have sold every available seat for home games this season. Montreal had the lowest payroll at $15.4 million. Others near the bottom were Kansas City at $18.5 million and Oakland at $19.4 million, a decrease from $35.9 million. Toronto had the biggest drop, falling from $49.4 million to $28.4 million. Following the strike, the average salary dropped 9.9 percent on opening day last year, the first significant decrease since be fore the free agent era began in 1976. Teams used 28-man rosters for the first three weeks of last season instead of the usual 25, causing an even steeper drop in the average. When rosters went back to the normal limit on May 16, the average salary was $1,132,571, according to managemen t’s Player Relations Committee, and pay rolls totaled $873.49 million. The opening day average this year was up 3.9 percent over that. Fielder tops the pay chart at $9,237,500, including his $7.2 million base salary and a prorated share of his signing bonus. Barry Bonds is second at $8,416,667, fol lowed by Ken Griffey Jr. ($7.5 million), Frank Thomas ($7.15 million), Juan Gon zalez ($7.1 million) and Mark McGwire ($7 million), who is on the disabled list with a foot injury and may be sidelined for two months. IRVING. Texas (AP) — A1 fredo Pooerts apologized Tuesday for his involvement in a motel room incident where drugs were found and said he did not betray former teammate Michael Irvin in a bid to avoid indictment by a grand jury. “That is something that nev er crossed my mind,” Roberts said at a news conference at the Cowboys Sports Cafe, where he spoke at length for the first time since the March! incident. He would not com ment on specifics of the case be cause of a judge’s gag order. “As far as my Relationship with my friend ... we under stand what we’re going through and the love I have for him that no one could ever imagine," Roberts said, adding he loves the Dallas Cowboys receiver like the brother he never had. Irvin and two topless dancers were indicted Monday on charges of cocaine and mari juana possession. The 30-year old All-Pro receiver is free on S5,500 bond and will await tri al along with Angela Renee Beck, 22, and Jasmine J. Nab- wangu, 21. No trial date has been set. Roberts, former Cowboys tight end and associate in Irvin’s “Mas- terpeace Ragz” line of apparel, was in the room with the trio but was not charged. He said he never could have made a deal with prosecutors I for leniency at Irvin’s expense. “I myself did not receive, nor did not know of receiving, any- l thing different from anyone else ...,” said Roberts, who also played with Irvin at the Ur/ versity of Miami. “The facts ait that I know of no other prefer ential treatment that I’ve re ceived. I’ve done everything just like everybody else.” Furthermore, his attorney Don Tittle said, “It would sur prise m e if he were called by the state as a witness.” If convicted, Irvin and Beck could face two to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for felony possession of four or more grams of cocaine. The felony indictment against Nab- wangu was for a lesser charge of possessing less than a gram of cocaine, punishable by up to two years in prison. As he appeared before re porters Tuesday, Roberts apolo gized to his family, friends and public for his involvement in the incident. “There’s not many things I regret in my life, but I regret finding myself in this position, he said. “If I’m guilty of anything, it is poor judgment.” When was asked whether he had used or uses drugs, Roberts replied, “absolutely not.” Irvin Local business needs full-time warehouse help Please call 779-7043 for information on resume sub mittal.
