Shannon 846-8295 Page 6 • The Battalion Friday • March 22, 1996 NCAAs: Kentucky, Umass show why they’re top seeds Georgetown defeated Texas Tech, 98-90 (AP) — Louisville’s last two shots at victory bounced off the rim. And while Wake Forest’s players danced, a groan could almost be heard all the way from bluegrass country. The Demon Deacons ad vanced to the final of the Mid west Regional on Thursday night with a 60-59 victory over the Cardinals in Minneapolis. Also advancing to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals were Massachusetts, Georgetown and Kentucky. The Hoyas held off a late Texas Tech rally for a 98-90 win in the East Regional at At lanta. In the final they’ll meet Massachusetts, which defeated Arkansas 79-63. Wake Forest (26-5), the re gion’s second seed, will play top-seeded Kentucky (31-2) on Saturday with a chance to reach the Final Four for the first time in 34 years. A Cardinals victory would have renewed one of college basketball’s fiercest rivalries — Kentucky vs. Louisville. Duncan would have none of that. He scored 27 points, in cluding the go-ahead three- point play with 1:16 remain ing. The All-American center, who played with the flu and was limited to 23 points total in the Demon Deacons’ first two tournament victories, also had 13 rebounds and seven blocks. DeJuan Wheat missed two shots in the final minute, in cluding an off-balance bank in the closing seconds. UMass coach John Calipari didn’t start All-American cen ter Marcus Camby, who was late for the team bus. But it didn’t matter as the Minute- men (34-1) overpowered the Razorbacks, appearing in the round of 16 for the fourth straight year. Carmelo Travieso, who tum bled off a podium during a news conference the day be fore, showed no ill effects from his fall. He scored 14 points, one of five Minutemen in dou ble figures. Tyrone Weeks, who started for Camby, tied a career-high with 16 points. Camby added 15, Dana Dingle 12 and Donta Bright 11. Allen Iverson scored 32 points on just 10-of-29 shoot ing. He scored six points dur ing a 17-0 run in the second half that gave the Hoyas a 72- 61 lead. “The first half, I was a little excited,” Iverson said. “I was up for the game. I missed some shots I should have made. The team talked to me (at half time), and I was able to get my game together.” Othella Harrington carried Georgetown in the first half, scoring 18 points. Kentucky (31-2) had just two starters play 25 minutes and 10 Wildcats played more than 13 in a 101-70 rout of Utah in the Midwest Regional. Jason Sasser had 25 points to pace Texas Tech, which had four players foul out. Kentucky unleashed its at tack from the opening tap against the Utes, who suffered their worst lost since a 31- point loss to Brigham Young two years ago. The 101 points were the most given up by the Utes since allowing 113 to BYU in 1984. Utah had limited oppo nents to 63 points per game, and hadn’t given up mor| than 85 all year. Kentucky reached that total with 7:52 left, then played sloppily the rest of the way. Utah (27-7) did a decent job against Kentuck y’s pressure, but still committed 21 turnovers. The Wildcats turned those into 30 points. “I knew what Kentucky was going in and I know even more going out,” coach Rick Majerus said. In Friday’s games, Missis sippi State (24-7) plays Con necticut (32-2) and Cincinnati (27-4) meets Georgia Tech (24- 11) in the Southeast Regional at Lexington, Ky. In the West Regional at Denver, Georgia (21-9) faces Syracuse (26-8) and Kansas (25-5) plays Ari zona (27-11). Chicago keeps rolling Baseball sans Rodman, Pippen Michael Jordan scored 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Jordan had 36 points and 11 re bounds Thursday night and the Chicago Bulls used a 20-1 run in the second quarter to avenge their worst loss of the season as they beat the New York Knicks 107-86. The Bulls extended their NBA record with their 41st con secutive regular-season home win. Orlando, which did not play Thursday and is on the road Friday, has 40 straight wins at home. Chicago, which won its sixth in a row, needs 10 wins in its last 15 games to finish with an NBA-record 70 victories. Scottie Pippen started for Chicago after missing five games with a sore ankle, but he wasn’t much of a factor. He picked up two quick fouls and didn’t score until 10:29 remained in the fourth period, finishing with six points and six rebounds. Toni Kukoc, who started the five games Pippen missed, had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Continued from Page 5 ence play, the Aggies will have to stay focused. “We need to stay focused and we need to stay within ourselves,” Hunter said. “Bj th.at I mean stay with our swings instead of trying to hit home runs and do extraordi nary stuff. We need to do what is going to make us suc cessful, and that’s getting all of the hit situations and basi cally doing our jobs.” After this four-game week end at home, the Aggies will head to Lubbock where they will take on the No.4 Red Raiders of Texas Tech in a four-game series. Lately, it seems that profes sional sports are not keeping their athletes busy enough. Or at least in the little free time the athletes do have, they can’t keep themselves out of trouble, and that means during and after games. If you haven’t heard that Michael Irvin was caught in a hotel room where a women was arrested on drug charges, then you obviously are not a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan or maybe you just don’t care. In fact, I really don’t care about this particular incident be cause, in my opinion, whatever Irvin does in his spare time is none of my business. The problem I have with all of this deals with the fact that these big-time athletes don’t watch their back and instead, do stupid things that just get them in trouble. They should be worrying about acting like role-models in public instead of hanging around people with the pen chant for getting busted by the cops for drug possession. Unfortunately, the Dallas Cowboys will probably have to take the bad rap for all of this. Now, for all of those people who hated the Cowboys have another reason for hating — or to say the least, they have a new topic for discussion at their 49ers’ Fan Club Meeting. Anyway, even though I am pretty neutral as far as pro foot ball goes, I think that these ath letes get paid enough and have enough to do with upholding a decent athletic reputation than spend their time finding trouble. The perfect example of this is Dennis Rodman — the ultimate rule-basher in professional sports today. Instead of following the norm on and off the court, he decides that whenever anyone does to of fend him or tell him he is wrong, he throws a temper tantrum, head-butts the referee and strips from the waist up. To sum it up, he makes a ridiculous fool out of himself. Now he has to spend more time paying off fines, sitting through suspensions and trying to win back respect from the NBA officials. It is all a process that could have been alleviated if he would have just thought of his team be fore his selfish tendencies. Why do talented athletes such as Irvin and Rodman have to act in these counterproductive ways? I’m sure that with all of their money they can find something better to do with their time and financial situations. Plus, I’m sure the teams they represent can earn a little more respect are getting k little sick of putting up with all of their irra tional actions. In the long run, the entire team is the one that will suffer if the Chicago Bulls falter without Rodman, and now the Dallas Cowboys’just have another up hill battle of a media scandal in trying to clear Irvin’s name.
