Festival Singers focuses on Christian, holiday music By Amy Protas The Battalion L ynn Zimmermann, a senior academic adviser in the college of business admin istration, always dreamed of conducting a choir. Last year, that dream came true with the creation of the Festival Singers. Zimmermann said he was in his college choir for three years and enjoyed the experience tremendously. He wanted to give students the same opportunity. “I’ve always had this dream to direct my own choir,” Zimmer mann said. “In the summer, I do a lot of advising of freshmen. I looked at their files to see who participated in high school and church choir. I later asked them if they had tried out for on cam pus choirs. A number of them were missing out on the opportu nity of campus singing groups.” Zimmermann said out of the more than 42,000 students on campus, only 250 participate in campus singing groups. He said he knows there is more talent on campus, and Festival Singers is another chance for students to “The message we want to get across is that music is important for the soul, enjoying life and rais ing people’s spirits. In the process, we are praising God.” Francisco Merchan, a Festival Singers member and a sophomore aerospace engineering major, said the choir’s religious focus is what makes it unique from other cam pus singing groups. degree musician, and those who participate probably don’t have a lot of experience.” Sandy Drager, a Festival Singers member and a junior cell and molecular biology major, said she has never been involved in choir before, but she wanted to join the choir. “I have always been a car or a shower singer, but never in front "It just seemed like a really neat way to meet people. It gives people a chance to sing without auditions." — sandy drager member of the Festival Singers enjoy singing. The Festival Singers is a group that focuses on singing holiday and festival music. “There is a message we want to get across,” Zimmermann said. “We try to do religious festivals, but we don’t use traditional songs,” Merchan said. “We try to use songs people haven’t heard before. There was one we practiced that’s a Russian choral piece.” For those who want to sing but do not have the confidence to try out in front of others, the Festival Singers just might be the organization to join. The group holds no auditions. Zimmerman said anyone who wants to join is welcome. “We’re unique because we’re small, strictly voluntary and am ateur,” Zimmermann said. “That means our goal is to learn to sing and to enjoy to sing. By vol untary, I mean no auditions. We’re amateur because I’m not a of a lot of people,” Drager said. “It just seemed like a really neat way to meet people. It gives peo ple a chance to sing without au ditions. It also gives practice for those who want to practice for different organizations.” Kirsten Schulte, a Festival Singers member and a sopho more psychology major, said it would not be fair to exclude those who want to join from participating. “We don’t have tryouts, and that’s important for those who are shy,” Schulte said. “Our fo cus is to sing Christian music for God’s glory, not our own. It’s not up to us to decide who de serves to be there. This is a Christian organization, and if God’s calling you to sing, its not up to us to exclude. “Everyone sounds good to if they’re singing to him.” The Festival Singers’ incep tion was last fall, when tl; members would gather arounl the piano in the Forsyth Centei in the MSC. “Our biggest problem has been finding a common time an! a place available for us to tice,” Zimmermann said. “So« started by practicing in tbs Forsyth Gallery. “They have a nice grand pi ano, so we stood around the pi ano and sang Christmas carols. Schulte said being partofs new organization gives mein hers the chance to help develoi the organization. “We want everyone toco® and sing and praise Schulte said. “It can evolve i® anything we want. The who join will be in the fraflit work and get to build it to vfb J we want.” Zimmermann said music lif people’s spirits. “For me, music and singing an up-beat kind of thing,” Zi« mermann said. “So many thin! in this world are down-beat “You look around and seen the crime and poverty. If) 1 look too closely and you get! 11 couraged, you can sing and)’ 111 spirits soar.” TUG OF HONOR Tnmu Non-Reg vs Corps Tug of War & BBQ Sunday, March 24 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Simpson Drill Field BBQ for a small $3 charge Pi '-O r ' s Wst 00 ' T ' *ts R ; 2 f°° UVe ^o Te u g Come out for good food, fun, and competition JJKA20STUADER ^ANTIQUES & COllECTIBUi- Framed Art >»■ Glassware (»• Po^ >*■ Books f*- Records l* Military djr Furniture Tools Chin* Antiques & Collectibles Beetle Memoriabilia >*■ Lamps ^ ^ M - F 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sat 9 a.in. - 5 p.m. Sundays byd' llll< 210 West 26th St., Bryan (409)77^ SCHULMANSi' 2000 E. 29TH 775-2* BEFORE 6 P.M. $ 1 50 AFTERe PG-13-GRUMPIER OLD MEN Fri-Sun « 1:10 3:155:20^ PG -FATHER OF THE BRIDE P Fri-Sun 'lOSrilB.
