Part-time income The Army Reserve Alternate Training Program is a smart way to pay for college. First, if you qualify, the Mont gomery GI Bill can provide you with up to $6,920 for current college ex penses or approved vo/tech training. Second, if you have—or obtain—a qualified student loan not in default, you may get it paid off at the rate of 1596 per year or $500, whichever is greater, up to a maximum of $10,000. Selected military skills can double that maximum. Third, you can earn part-time money in college, and here’s how it works: One summer you take Basic Training, and the next summer you receive skill training at an Army school. You’ll earn over $1,500 for Basic and even more for skill training. Then you’ll attend monthly meetings at an Army Reserve unit near your college, usually one weekend a month plus two weeks a year. You’ll be paid over $105 a weekend to start. It’s worth thinking about. Give us a call: (409)764-0418 BE ALL YOU CAN BE? ARMY RESERVE HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME. Ask for Joseph at (606) 277-8905 or 259 Shady Lane, Lexington, KY 40503 Grants & Scholarships jexas Tech — where men are men and women are national champions.” That was how my father jok ingly described his beloved Red Raiders after their women’s basketball team stunned the nation by winning the national championship in 1993. It’s been a love-hate rela tionship with the Red Raiders in the Clark family for years. My parents are Tech gradu ates, so I had a natural affinity for the school growing up. I wore Tech garb proudly, think ing one day I too would wear the double T on the Lubbock campus. But I grew cynical in my old age, I suppose, and ended up here at A&M. My father still clings to his theory that I came to A&M because the Aggie sports teams have “cooler uni forms than Tech.” But I was satisfied with my decision. I never had to deal with the dreaded phone call of “I didn’t see the score of the A&M-Tech football game, Rob. What was it?” A&M simply dominated. Sure, Tech had the edge in other sports, especially men’s and women’s basketball, but we still had football, and usually baseball. Not anymore. The Texas tables have turned, and Tech has the upper hand. I don’t like it. It’s nothing against the Red Raiders. 1 root for them as long as they aren’t playing the Aggies. But this is getting out of hand. Tech’s women’s basket ball team has been a national powerhouse for several years now. The Tech football team dropped the mighty “national championship bound” Aggies this year and followed that up with a convincing win over Ait Force in the Copper Bowl, The Tech baseball team is currently sixth in the nation, with the Aggies checkinginat No. 18. And perhaps the biggestsut prise is Tech’s men’s basketba! team, with an astounding23'. record and a No. 9 ranking. A&M hasn’t been in thetop2j in men’s basketball since the in auguration of Millard Filmore. And Tech has longed for an exclusive rivalry with A&Mfoi years. With so much of the SWC focus shining on A&M and the University of Texas, Tech has always been reduced to the “little brother’’ role. V else is there? Rivalries with TCU, Rice and Baylor just doE make for good headlines. But when the Aggies comet: town, the entire city of Lubboci is abuzz. Events like the 1994 basketball game brawl betweet Tech fans and then-A&Mbas ketball star Joe Wilbert show just how much tension can bo between the two schools. It’s time to push the panic button. The Aggies have enough trouble as it is with the Longhorns without having to deal with the Red Raiders as the Big 12 powerhouse teams loom large in the distance. This isn’t to say I’ll be de fecting to Tech anytime soon.l don’t regret my decision to at tend A&M (well, not for sports reasons anyway). After all, there is a lot more to college than sports and “cool uniforms.” But hearing my par ents’ evil cackle after a Tech win against A&M just doesn’t sit well with me. And somehow, saying, “Texas A&M — where men are men and women are NIT champions” just doesn't make me feel any better. Thursc D Cont we pk “Obvi< aroun better Th< bumii and g the ga Ba first t teams “(A about Oft-injured Gonzalez ready to blast off again □ The Rangers' out fielder hit 27 home runs in just 90 games. PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) — After hitting 27 home runs last season in an injury- shortened 90-game run, Texas Ranger Juan Gonzalez is healthy and serving notice on the opposition. “The last two years. I’ve had a lot of injuries,” said Gonzalez, who this week arrived early at spring training for the first time in his career. “But what happens when Juan stays healthy all year — 45 or 50 home runs? It’s a new year, 1 have a new attitude and if I stay healthy, I’ll be right there in the home run competi tion.” Rangers management sa vored the encouraging signs. Gonzalez weighed in at 229 pounds, nine pounds lighter than last season. And the still strapping outfielder was the only Ranger Tuesday to knock more than a couple batting prac tice pitches into a stiff breeze and out of the park. “He put on quite a display,” Rangers general manager Doug Melvin said. “And I was watch ing Juan in the outfield, and he has a brisk look to him. It looks like he’s having fun and like he’s happy to be here.” Gonzalez, who plans to lose another five pounds, said he looks forward to the changed pace to right field, where he has n’t played since early in his mi nor league career. “It’s all right, because The Ballpark in Arlington has a big left field and center field,” he said. “I pre fer to play right field be cause when I first started to play baseball, I played right. I never forgot the movement. I feel more comfortable there.” Back prob- Gonzalez lems limited Gonzalez last sea son, but he still managed to place second on the team in home runs and RBIs (82). At 26, he is the team’s all-time homer leader. “Juan looks good and hehasa great attitude,” Melvin said. “And he walked right out to right field. He said he’ll do what ever it takes to help the team. He’s starting to show some lead ership skills.” IP" 1996 WOMEN’S WEEK AWARDS 1 Texas A&M University’s Women’s Week Awards, established in 1994 as part of Women’s Week, are designed to honor Texas A&M University students, staff, faculty and administrators who encourage and promote the sensitivity to and awareness of issues that relate to women.
