LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dar
ryl Strawberry pleaded innocent
on Tuesday to charges that he
ignored a court’s order to make
support payments for his two
children.
Strawberry, who played for
the New York Yankees and Los
Angeles Dodgers before becom
ing a free agent last fall, is
charged with one count of willful
failure to provide child support
and two counts of failure to obey
a court order.
Strawberry did not appear at
the Superior Court hearing. His
lawyer, Milton Grimes, entered
the plea on his behalf. A March
6 trial date was set.
If convicted. Strawberry could
serve one year in county jail.
Strawberry’s former wife,
Lisa Strawberry, contends that
he owes more than $370,000 in
back payments.
Strawberry, who once signed
a $20.25 million, five-year con
tract with the Dodgers, has bat
tled alcohol and cocaine abuse.
He spent a month in a Los Ange-

after his release from the
Dodgers. He also served time in
home confinement last year for
tax evasion for unreported earn
ings from baseball card shows.
In 1995, Strawberry earned
$750,000 playing for the Yan
kees, who failed to pick up a
$1.8 million option on his con
tract at the end of the season.
The Strawberrys divorced in
1993. Strawberry has admitted
to hitting her and was arrested
several years ago for threaten
ing her with a gun. They have
two children, Darryl, Jr., 10; and
Diamond Nicole, 7.
