By Nicole Smith The Battalion When it comes to describing ju nior transfer forward Melissa Roller- son, the words unselfish, hard-work ing, well-rounded, and most impor tantly, team player, come to mind. Playing a reserve role for the Lady Aggie Basketball Team this season, Rollerson has not had much of an opportunity to exhibit her ath leticism. But, there is no doubt the Lady Aggies will utilize her talents in the future. When asked what her goals were for this year, Rollerson could only come up with one thing: “to do what ever is needed to help the team.” No individual glory, no SWC rookie awards, no nothing. “My whole purpose this year was to step up and play Division I ball,” Rollerson said. “When I’m needed, I’ll perform to the best of my abili ties, but other than that I have no individual goals in mind.” As a standout at Trinity Val ley Community College, Roller- son earned almost every acco lade awarded at the junior col lege level. A cut in playing time might bother most athletes, but not Rollerson. “I would rather see someone else do well than score all the points my self,” Rollerson said. “I am particu larly proud that I was able to over look all the glory of being a Division I player and focus on being strictly a team player. “Whether it is from the sideline or out on the court, it doesn’t make a difference to me.” With that in mind, is it any won der the 6-foot, 1-inch forward ended up on the A&M Basketball team? Maybe it was her capability of playing the three or four position that captured the Lady Aggie coach ing staffs eye. Whatever the reason, both her teammates and coaches feel Rollerson has made a contribution to the team and that she possesses the skills to play at the Division I level. Rollerson admits that even though there are several games re maining this season, she looks for ward to next year. “Although I don’t have much pressure on me to score right now, ]The G teelers owl XX Evan Zimmerman, THE Baitaiion Junior transfer Melissa Rollerson shows off her ballhandiing skills. I do look forward to playing a se- nior role, Rollerson said. “But first, I must do whatever is put upon me to help the team do well the rest of the season.” WWF: Who Watches Fake (wrestling:) H as anyone ever been channel surf ing and come across two grown men dressed in fancy cos tumes, (or at least partly dressed), who are trying to tear each other to pieces in front of a screaming crowd of 5,000 people? Unfortunately, I did the other night. I was waiting for the National Figure Skating Championships to come on, and instead of chang ing the channel to some thing educational, I decid ed that it was time for me to expand my knowledge on World Championship Wrestling. Although I admit I wasn’t totally captivated by the match-up between Macho Man Randy Sav age and Ric Flair, who by the way, spent more time out of the ring than in it, I Nicole Smith Sportswriter did begin to admire the “unrehearsed” and “un planned” acting with which these two men were trying to entertain us. Not only did they make me wonder of how a person can take blows to the head, be thrown in and out of the ring, and withstand several blows to the stomach without shedding one drop of blood or suffering from one broken bone, but watching them also gave me a sense of pity and embarrassment. I truly began to feel sorry and embarrassed for these two people, who obviously had nothing better going on in their lives and had to resort to degrading themselves by wearing skimpy spandex costumes and shiny vinyl combat boots. I guess they think they are role models for mil lions of naive children out there who actually think that there is a real fight going on. Or maybe all of their yelling and screaming gives them a sense of power and self-confi dence that they some how missed when they were growing up. Whatever the rea son may be, I don’t know. What I do know, though, is that I am not impressed at all by their athletic abilities, because they have none, or their greased up muscles, be cause the muscles they do have are covered up by beer bellies and tattoos. Tickets to these shows definitely are not cheap. First of all, most of them are televised on either USA or the Home Sports Channel, and second of all, they are held at large hotels in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. This fight was held at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and was supposed to be “the fight” of the year. If I remember cor rectly, the winner’s tro phy was a plastic belt that had “Heavyweight Champion of the World” on it. I can’t understand why people actually sup port this kind of childish activity. Heck, Kevin Green of the Pittsburgh Steerers decided this fight was more important than practicing for the to come on. books • music • video • software MSC FILM SOCIETY PRESENTS... Oral least I hope he was en tertained so much that he doesn’t need to play or watch a real sport ever again. If nothing else, I just hope that the men fight ing these matches learn how to act better. If this is going to be their career and put food on their ta bles, they definitely need to do a better job of con vincing us that they are actually fighting.
