The game, with its noon kick off, will open Big 12 play for both Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. Also, Texas and Texas A&M announced that their game next fall is being moved to the day ter Thanksgiving. ABC-TV’s original contract with the Big 12 called for the A&M-Texas game to be played Thanksgiving morning. Texas A&M athletic director Wally Groff said network cials asked If' the two i schools last month if they favored play- ing on 'Thanksgiving Day or the follow ing day. Both replied that they pre ferred Thanksgiving Day, Groff said Monday. But at this month’s NCAA convention, ABC officials told both schools they were scrubbing all Thanksgiving Day football plans in deference to competing NFL telecasts. A decision on future dates for the A&M-Texas series remains in the air, Groff said. Groff said A&M and Brigham Young are under strong consider ation to play in the Pigskin Clas sic on Aug. 24. “Apparently we're getting close to the short list,” Groff said “It’s something we’re very much in fa vor of doing.” Since the Pigskin Classic doesn’t count against a team’s 11-game maximum, A&M could wind up playing as many as 14 games next season if the Ag gies also play in the first Big 12 championship game next season and also end up in a post-season bowl. lor good. (AP) — Bill Walsh could be on the verge of returning to the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers called a news con ference for Tuesday, and team spokesman Dave Rahn said Walsh, club president Carmen Policy and coach George Seifert all would be there. Rahn said Monday night he could not confirm reports that Walsh, who led the 49ers to three Super Bowl titles in 10 years as their coach, would re join the team in a yet to be de fined role. Telephone calls to Walsh and Policy were not returned. Walsh’s addi tion won’t affect the position of Seifert, who guided San Francisco to two Super Bowl tri umphs in the seven years since succeeding Walsh in 1989. San Francisco was denied a chance to defend its fifth cham pionship when the Green Bay Packers upset the 49ers 27-17 in a divisional playoff this month. Walsh, whose offensive sys tem is still run by the 49ers, has operated quarterback camps and worked for the NFL in an advisory role the last year. He spent the previous three years in a second tour as Stanford coach before resign ing in 1994. Walsh quit as 49ers coach fol lowing the 1988 season, which ended with the team’s third Su per Bowl crown. He stayed with the organization briefly as an administrator. Ne\ j Hou!
