Started in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday that takes place after Christmas. Eric Curley, director of community for BAG and a sophomore chemistry major, said today’s Pre-Kwanzaa celebration will be an educational event to explain the meaning of Kwanzaa. “Kwanzaa is celebrated the seven days af ter Christmas until New Years Day,” he said. “There is a different principle for each day.” Among these principles are unity, self de termination, creativity and faith. Curley said the principles deal with strengthening family and community. “Faith is the most important because you must build things with God as your base,” he said. Raymond Boney, director of programs for BAG and a senior speech communications major, said he sees the most important prin ciple of Kwanzaa differently. “I think the most important principle is self determination,” he said. “It is the dri ving force behind Kwanzaa.” Curley said a candle is lit each day of Kwanzaa. At the end of the each day, small gifts are exchanged. "It brings people together and shows the rich culture of African Americans." — Raymond Boney director of programs, Black Awareness Committee “They aren’t gifts that you go out and buy,” he said. “They are gifts you make from something you already own.” Curley said the purpose of Kwanzaa is to bring the community together and uplift it. This is done by bringing people together and discussing the principles of Kwanzaa. “You get together to talk about what each day means and how you can build upon those principles,” he said. “You make sure you are progressing and building upon what you already have.” Kwanzaa is not a time just for the munity, he said, but for the family as Curley said he enjoys the holiday becaiisi what his family gains from the time in together discussing the principles. “It’s a time where my family can come gether and see where we stand on the prit pies,” he said. Boney said when the family gathers; discuss the principles, it is important^ the children involved in the conversation, "Kwanzaa is a thanksgiving,” he i “Thanks for the children.” Boney said the program being held p.m. in Rudder 601 and will take audi members through the celebration of Kw? zaa to give a better understanding o it means. “Kwanzaa is really a celebration rich culture of African Americans,” he ® “It brings people together and shows ther; culture of African Americans.” Curley said Kwanzaa is not a meant to replace Christmas, nor is it to celebrated solely by African Americans “It is a time for us to re-evaluate ouin ues and make your family and communit lot stronger,” he said, “and that can lead to better things.” WHAT INSPIRED THE MOUNTAIN MEN? George Washington: “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” Abraham Lincoln: “Intelligence, Patriotism, Christianity, and a firm reliance on Him who has never yet forsaken this favored land are still competent to adjust in the best way all our present difficulty. ...As was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said, ‘the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether’” Thomas Jefferson: “God who gave us life gave us I Can the liberties of a nation be seme when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God Indeed I tremble for my country when reflect that God is just, that His j cannot sleep forever.” Teddy Roosevelt: "There are those who believe that! new modernity demands a ne morality. What they fail to consider the harsh reality that there is no si thing as a new morality. There is oo| one morality. All else is immoralitj. There is only true Christian ethics ova against which stands the wholeoi paganism. If we are to fulfill ourgreai destiny as people, then we must retort to the old morality, the sole morality.” Mon Conti some just a Co 50,00 Wiatf fewp “[I 19 ar R Conti presic istrat two p Bo leasei the r< turn A&M the p; “I addit tive a contrc Ga Unive hum a Plant food s Police Kr for th pure!
