Alabama’s
fate to be
revealed by
week’s end
□ The Crimson Tide
appealed NCAA alle
gations*
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) ~~
An NCAA committee has decided
Alabama’s appeal of sanctions
against the football program and
will likely release its findings by
the week’s end, a spokeswoman
said Monday.
Given that timetable, the
21 st-ranked Crimson Tide (8*3)
should know by the day howl
bids go out whether the panel
will lift a ban on postseason play.
NCAA spokeswoman Kathryn
Reith said the Infractions Ap
peals Committee held a tele
phone conference call Monday to
go over a-draft opinion on the Al
abama case.
Representatives from the
school argued their case before
committee members on Nov.
16, claiming former faculty
athletics representative Tom
Jones was wrongly cited for un
ethical conduct.
“They decided on the day of
the hearing generally what the
outcome was going to be. Then
they assigned a member to write
up a report on the specific points
of the appeal,” Reith said. The
conference call is “to go over
wording, things like that.”
The report will likely be sent
to the school within two or three
days, and it should be made pub
lic soon after.
“The committee is very aware
of the time pressures in this
case,” said Reith. “1 know they
are trying to get a decision out
this week.”
A school spokesman said Al
abama had not made any bowl
plans but could act quickly given
a favorable decision.
“At this point we’re just
watching and waiting,” said Kei
th Ayers.
Alabama was placed on three
years of probation for rules viola
tions involving former Crimson
Tide stars Gene Jelks and Anto
nio Langham.

Monk returns
to NFL action
□ Monk is the all-time
NFL receptions leader
and will be a third-
stringer.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Art
Monk, the NFL’s all-time recep
tion leader, signed a free agent
contract with the Philadelphia
Eagles Monday and might play
against the Seattle Seahawks
Sunday.
Terms were not revealed, al
though club sources said Monk
will be paid about $50,000 for
the Eagles’ final four games.
Monk, 37, said he’s not in it
for the money, adding that he is
close to becoming part owner of
an advertising agency in the
Washington area.
“I love the game,” said Monk,
whose 934 career catches are 29
more than Jerry Rice. “This is
something I’ve enjoyed doing.
F’ootball has given me a great
talent in being able to catch the
ball and I just want to do it as
long as I possibly can.”
Monk, who spent his first 13
pro seasons with the Washing
ton Redskins, started all 16
games last season for the New
York Jets, catching 46 passes for
581 yards and three touch
downs.
But when the Jets hired for
mer Eagles coach Rich Kotite as
their new coach at the end of the
year, Monk was not brought
back. He said several teams had
contacted him, but that none
had offered him a contract.
“As the season kiqd of dwin
dled down, my hopes got less
and less, but I continued to work
out and to keep in shape in case
something were to happen.”

Brown? Ray Mickens? You
heard of those guys, dumb...?
And the game’s at Kyle.”
Him: “Please! You want to
talk defense? We got Tony
Brackens and big ol’ Stonie
Clark on the defensive line.
And, and, we got, and, we got
some other people I think.
“Besides, how good does ovr
defense need to be to stop ya’ll!
A&M’s offense had trouble get
ting past Rice and Houston and
even SMU?”
Me: “Two words: Leeland
McElroy. And the game’s at
Kyle.”
Him: “Yeah, well, Pullig
couldn’t complete a pass to save
his life.”
Me: “He went 24-of-36 for 253
yards and a touchdown against
TCU. He may just be on a roll,
and, plus, Saturday wilFbe his
last game at Kyle Field in front
of 75,000 screamin’ Aggie Fans.”
Him: “I can tell your nervous.
You’ve doubted your team,
aren’t you?”
Me: “Kyle Field, shmuck!
Kyle Field.”
Him: CENSORED. “Tell mom
I love her.”
Me: CENSORED. “Mom? You
know mom stop loving you right
after she caught you wearing
her garter belts that time.”
Am I nervous about Satur
day’s game? Nervous only with
anticipation, not with the final
outcome. How could one doubt
the Aggies at Kyle Field? Me?
nervous? Never.
Does anyone know where I
can get long-distance caller ID?
