AUSTIN (AP) — An ugly victo ry by No. 9 Texas over Texas Christian may have been uglier than first realized. Longhorns coach John Mack- ovic on Sunday said the status of quarterback James Brown “is more than iffy; it’s highly ques tionable” for Thursday’s home game against Baylor because of a sprained left ankle. “He’s had two or three treat ments already today,” Mackovic said Sunday afternoon during a conference call of Southwest Con ference coaches. “We’ll definitely be handling it on a day-to-day ba sis. ... We’ve got him in and out of a mobilizer to take care of it and support it.” Mackovic said X-rays showed that Brown did not break the an kle when he wrenched it late in a 27-19 victory Saturday over Texas Christian. “I was down and someone fell on the back of my ankle and my leg twisted outside to the left,” said Brown, a sophomore who is 12-1-1 as a starter. T’m hoping it wall be OK.” Brown also has had problems wdth his right, throwing shoulder, but Mackovic said Sunday that “I don’t think anyone cares about his arm right now.” “We’ll take his arm no mat ter how it is,” Mackovic said. “We just want to make sure we get him well.” Mackovic said backup quarter back Richard Walton will be pre pared to start for Texas (8-1-1, 5-0 Southwest Conference) on Thanksgiving night against Bay lor (7-3, 5-1) if Brown can’t play. “Richard has had a lot of prac tice and we have confidence in him,” Mackovic said. “He’s smart and he knows what we do and how we do it.” For Brown, the injury capped a frustrating game in which he was 0-of-6 in the second quarter and fin ished 12-of-29 for 127 yards. Lady Aggies in WNIT □ A&M was beaten by Colorado, 74-68. Staff and Wire Reports Maybe it’s something in the air. Sunday when the Lady Aggie Basketball Team lost to Colorado 74-68 in WNIT semifi nal action. A&M, which won the WNIT last season, stormed back on a 17-8 run that clipped CD’s lead to 66-65 with 3:37 to play. But A&M would get no closer as the Buffaloes went 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game to sew up the victory. The Lady Aggies were led by junior post Kelly Cerny, who shot 6-of-9 from the field to fin ish with 12 points, but she fouled out after only 18 min utes of play. Senior point guard Lisa Branch scored eight points — continuing her early-season shooting woes, but contributed to the Aggie cause with 10 assists and a season-high six steals. Also helping the Aggies was junior transfer forward Melissa Rollerson, who led the team with seven rebounds and scored 11 points. The Aggies trailed 33-31 at halftime before a crowd of 2,258, but the Buffaloes pulled away in the opening minutes of the second half. Colorado was led by center Erin Scholz, who scored 17 points and pulled down 12 re bounds. Also contributing for the Buffaloes was guard De Celle Thomas, who scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Colorado, now 3-0 on the year, will play the winner of the Ohio State-Arkansas game for the WNIT championship Tuesday night. Since 1992, Col orado has appeared in the title game of eight consecutive regu lar-season tournaments. The loss drops A&M to 2-1 on the year. Oilers choke again Kansas City Chiefs 20 Houston Oilers 13 □ A fumble recovery returned for a ID sealed the Oilers' fate. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were heading for overtime, then came a crunching hit on Todd McNair. Mark Collins returned Mc Nair’s fumble 34 yards for a touchdown with 15 seconds left Sunday night, lifting Kansas City past the Houston Oilers 20-13 and giving the Chiefs their first 10-1 record in team history. McNair, a former Chief, fum bled when hit by Doug Terry, and Collins scopped up the ball and scored almost untouched as the Chiefs maintained the best record in the NFL. The Oilers (4-7), who just four days earlier announced they were moving to Nashville, tenn., had forged a 13-13 tie with 1:50 left on Chris Chandler’s 40-yard pass on fourth down to Chris Sanders. The Chiefs, bottled up all night by a Houston defense ranked third in the NFL, had only 115 yards passing and 66 yards rushing, almost 90 yards below their rushing average. In scoring their first 13 points, the Chiefs’ offense moved only 46 yards. Chandler, facing fourth-and- 25 from the 40 with 1:50 left, wound up and hurled the ball to ward the end zone. Sanders, sur rounded by defenders Terry, Dale Carter and William White, came down with the ball, making it 13- 12 with 1:46 left. Soccer: Season ends, 2-1 Continued from Page 7 to A&M Head Coach G. Guerri- eri, who said his team had worked in practice to stop the designed play that allowed Gar rett to get in position to score. “The bad thing was that we prepared for exactly how they scored their first goal,” Guerrieri said. “We broke that down this week, prepared for it, and thought we had it taken care of, but a superior effort on Garrett’s part put it in the goal for them.” SMU kept constant pressure on A&M’s junior goalie Sunny McConnell the entire second half, coming dangerously close to scoring several times. McConnell was successful in keeping the Lady Mustangs out the net until Garrett scored on a corner kick with 5:21 left in the match. At 5-feet, 11-inches, Garrett used her height to get up over surrounding Aggie defenders to head the corner kick passed an outstretched McConnell. Garrett, who hit the crossbar on two previous second-half scor ing attempts, was relieved after the game that the ball finally found its way into the net. “When I saw the ball coming across I said to myself, ‘This one’s gotta go in,”’ Garrett said. "We just kept plugging away in the second half, and I’m just thankful that I was able to put that second goal in the net for us.” The Lady Aggies threatened to score with a desperate surge in the last few frantic minutes of the game, but SMU survived to win 2-1. After the contest, Guerrieri said the deciding factor in the defeat was SMU’s ability to ap ply pressure offensive and defen sive pressure throughout the match. “They came out and really ap plied a lot of pressure to us,” Guerrieri said. “They did a great job of never letting us get our selves calmed down and get the hall under control in order to play our type of game. Today, SMU deserved to win.”
