Price cashes in on playing opportunities □ The hard-hitting freshman intercepted his first pass Oct. 28. By David Winder The Battalion Last year, Michael Price started for both the offensive and defensive squads of the Texas football state champion Tyler John Tyler High School. This year as a freshman. Price starts on two squads for T Dallas Cowboys — that has caught the attention of his teammates and fans. “I’m just trying to get every one into the game,” Price said. “I’m trying to get the crowd pumped up. I’m always trying to do it, and a couple of times it’s worked. I’m trying to get hyped up to make a play.” Price came to Texas A&M on a track scholarship, but after he participated in a football game, he had to be switched to a football scholarship under NCAA rules. He’s one of our gunners on the punt coverage, and he’s covering kickoffs as a safety.” The last time Price played mainly on special teams was his freshman year in high school. Price has recorded five tackles this season on kickoff and punt coverages. But it has been Price’s en thusiasm on the field, which has been compared to that of Kenny Gant — formerly of the “I’ve al ways liked Texas A&M,” Price said. “It was close enough to go home and far enough away for me to grow up.” Price has seen some action this year at defensive back, his natural position. Against the University of Houston this sea son, Price picked off his first career past. “I wanted to make a play and show the coaches some thing,” Price said. “I knew they were going to go after me. The event will begin at 2 i p.m. at the Student Recreation- i al Center Natatorium. The Tiger men enter Fri day's meet coming off of a 142- ; 95 dual meet win over North- i east Louisiana last Saturday while the Lady Tigers are coming off an 89-153 loss to the University of Alabama on Nov. 4. Last week the 18th- ranked Lady Aggies cap tured the women’s team crown with 821.50 points, besting No. 3 Texas by 58.5 points. They captured 11 first- place awards on the weekend led by sophomore Stacie Karnes victory in the 500- meter free style in the first event of the weekend. Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M Soccer Team is hoping the third time is the charm. Saturday in Dallas, the Ag gies will take on No. 3 South ern Methodist University in a second-round NCAA Tourna ment game beginning at 2 p.m. The Aggies opened their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance with a 4-1 win over No. 16 Clemson last Sunday at the Aggie Soccer Complex. A&M is 0-2 against SMU this season, losing 3-1 on Oct. 25 in the clash for the Southwest Conference regular-season title, then 4-2 in overtime on Nov. 5 in the championship match of the SWC Tournament. A&M comes into the game ranked No. 10 in the final Soc cer America poll with an 18-5 record. Along with Maryland, A&M is the only team making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament to still be in the running. Homefield advantage is defi nitely favoring the Mustangs on Saturday. SMU is a stellar 10-0- 1 at Wescott Field while the Ag gies are only 4-3 on the road. But the Aggies do have some momentum on their side. SMU has never won an NCAA Tournament match — going 0- 3 in their previous appear ances in the postseason. The Aggies are hoping ju nior forward Yvette Okler will continue her hot streak in the postseason against SMU. In last Sunday’s win over Clemson, Okler was two-of- two on shots on goal. »...
