The Texas A&M Volleyball Team concluded its regular sea son with a tough win over Southwest Texas State Universi ty Tuesday night, 15-7, 9-15, 15- 4, 10-15 and 15-11. The Lady Aggies moved to a 21-5 record on the season with the five-game win at SWTSU’s Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos. After splitting the first two games, the Lady Aggies jumped out to an 11-0 lead in Game Three and cruised to a 15-4 win. But the Bobcats roared back in Game Four, notching six ser vice aces to take the 15-10 win. In the rally-score Game Five, the Bobcats leapt out to a 3-0 lead, but A&M charged back on an 11-4 run to sew up the victory and drop SWTSU to 19-14 on the season. The Lady Aggies were led as always by senior All-American candidate Suzy Wente, who notched a match-high 65 assists. Wente also contributed three block assists, 12 digs and four kills to the A&M cause. Sophomore middle blocker Cindy VanderWoude was the L,ady Aggies’ big offensive pro ducer, drilling 19 kills and lead ing the team with a .471 hitting percentage. VanderWoude was supported on offense by senior outside hitter Andrea Williams, who contributed 13 kills and seven digs, and sophomore outside hitter Kristie Smedsrud who hit a double-dou ble with 15 kills and 10 digs. A&M senior outside hitter Dana Santleben led all players in the match with 17 kills. As has been there norm throughout the season, the Lady Aggies’ offensive produc tion fluctuated greatly from game to game. Mariners’ Johnson grabs AL Cy Young □The flame-throwing righthander went 18-2 and struck out 294 bat ters this year. NEW YORK (AP) — Randy Johnson, whose intimidating fastball and improved control led the Seattle Mariners to the play offs for the first time, overwh elm - ingly won his first AL Cy Young Award on Tuesday. Johnson got all but two of the 28 first- place votes in becoming the first Seattle player to win a major post- johnson season award in the team’s 19- year history. Johnson came within one vic tory of becoming the first AL player since Hal Newhouser of Detroit in 1945 to win pitching’s Triple Crown. Johnson went 18- 2, led the majors in strikeouts for the fourth straight year with 294 and led the league with a 2.48 ERA. The 6-foot-10 left-hander, who combined his 100 mph fastball with the best control of his career, was the only pitcher listed on all 28 ballots and fin ished with 136 points in voting by the Baseball Writers Associ ation of America. Cleveland reliever Jose Mesa received the other two first-place votes and was runner-up with 54 points.
