IRVING (AP) — Jerry Jones hired a coach who can’t beat San Francisco and doesn’t know how to use Deion Sanders. So what did Jones do with his world crashing around him on Tuesday? He an nounced Barry Switzer would be the coach barring calamity. “Unless he is hit by a truck or gets shot he’ll be coaching the Dallas Cowboys a long time,” the Cowboys owner said. Jones once said former coach Jimmy Johnson could be replaced by “one of 500 coaches” and hired Switzer, who never coached in the NFL before but won national titles at Oklahoma. But Switzer’s game- plan unraveled in a 38- 20 loss to the 49ers on Sunday when Jerry Rice ran through the unprepared Cowboys like it was a skeleton pass drill. Rice, covered by a linebacker, caught "Deion will have to play in our scheme because we can't change it around him." — Barry Switzer Dallas Cowboy head coach a short pass and turned it into an 81-yard touchdown on the second play of the game Sanders, who was signed by Jones for a $35 million package, didn’t shadow Rice un til it was too late. Now Switzer is 0-3 in two years against a team Johnson mastered. But Jones came out in his strongest statement yet about Switzer’s future. Jones said his coaching staff could have done a better job but added “I’ll never make a decision on a coach on a one- or two-year basis. I’ll be unbelievably stubborn when it comes to making a head coaching change. Make no mistake about it there will not be a change in coach.” What if the Cowboys lose to the 49ers again in the NFC championship game, or make it to the Super Bowl and fail? "I’ll just put my head in a pillow and holler as loud as I can,” Jones said. “There will be no changes in the organization if we don’t win the Super Bowl.” Jones, desperate to win a Super Bowl without Johnson along, said he cried after the 38-28 NFC championship loss to San Francisco last January. “There were no tears after we lost on Sun day,” Jones said. “There are a lot of dooms day forecasts now about the projections of our team. I’ve made a living off people who have given up too quickly.” Jones said he was stunned by the lack of Sanders’ impact on the game. "I didn’t think with Deion in the game Rice could beat us,” Jones said. Switzer said the Cow boys had spent over nine hours studying film of the game and how Sanders could have been used differently. Switzer said the Cowboys will use other schemes now against teams that put their best receiver in the slot. Sanders also will play more offense and likely be on the kick ing teams against Oakland on Sunday. “Deion will have to play in our scheme be cause we can’t change it around him,” Switzer said. “Deion will be integrated into our system. If we have to play San Francisco again, we will be much better prepared.” Biggio eyes Colorado Rockies □ The Astros' second baseman is a free agent after passing on a four-year deal with Houston. HOUSTON (AP) — Free agent Craig Biggio let a deadline pass on a four-year contract offer to remain with the Houston Astros and apparently is eying the Col orado Rockies. ‘We have been contacted by 10 teams expressing some type of interest,” Biggio’s agent, Barry Axelrod, said Monday. “I can safely say there are three teams that are above all the others, and the Rockies are in that top three.” Rockies general manager Bob Gebhard was non-committal, but said he spoke with Axelrod “and about 20 other agents.” Biggio reportedly was offered a four- year, $20 million deal from the Astros, but declined to consider other options mainly because of the uncertainty of the franchise. The Astros are considering moving to Washington for the 1997 season. Biggio said during the season that the Rockies were his No. 1 choice if he left the Astros. Biggio hit .302 with 22 home runs, 77 RBI, 33 stolen bases and major-league leading 123 runs scored despite primarily hitting second in 1995. It may be difficult for the Rockies to fit Biggio into their payroll structure, however. The Rockies already have guaranteed con tracts with 11 players for nearly $31 million of a $36 million salary budget for 1996. “All I can say is we have a lot of interest in a lot of players,” Geb hard said. “Financially we are close to where we have targeted (for the budget).” Gebhard also is continuing to explore the resigning of shortstop Walt Weiss. He met with Weiss’ agent, Jim Bron- ner, during a break in the general manager’s meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz., Monday. ‘T wouldn’t say Cowboys' cornerback Deion Sanders sk. see plenty of playing time Sunday in Oakb Stars remain winless after loss to Penguin PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mario Lemieuxl two goals and an assist to raise his leading point total to 40 and help the Pitfr] burgh Penguins beat the Dallas Stars Tuesday night. The Stars are winless in six games, 0-33 while the Penguins are on a 7-1-1 streak. Pitt burgh goaltender Tom Barrasso extended his personal unbeaten streak to 7-0-2. Lemieux has O Biggio there is much to report,” Gebhard said. “They are starting to entertain other of fers, but we’re still talking. We’d like to re sign Walt, but where it goes from here I don’t know.” Biggio joins Toronto’s Roberto Alomar as free-agent All-Star second basemen. scored points in all 12 of his games this season and has had multiple points in 11 games. Lemieux scored the first of Pitts burgh’s two power- play goals in the first period. After his goal at 9:43, Markus Naslur converted Ron Francis’ pass for his sixth gos: at 17:37. Lemieux’s breakaway goal at 2:32 of the- third gave the Penguins a 3-1 lead. Later, ht made a one-handed pass to set up Dave Roche’s! first NHL goal at 12:33 of the third.
