NAHA, Japan (AP) — The three U.S. service- nen spotted the 12-year-old schoolgirl as she stood utside a stationery store where she had gone to •uy a notebook. According to prosecutors, the men grabbed her, hoved her into a car and bound her with tape that hey had bought, along with condoms, at a grocery tore on a U.S. airbase. Then, they drove her down i lonely road lined with fields of sugar cane. Navy Seaman Marcus D. Gill calmly confessed "uesday to raping the girl — a crime that has lamaged America’s security ties with its most mportant Pacific ally. Marine Pfcs. Rodrico tarp and Kendrick Ledet admitted to lelping him. The rape has prompted an outpouring of anger n Okinawa, where more than 26,000 U.S. troops, ncluding the largest contingent of Marines out- ide of the United States, are stationed. The uproar showed little sign of abating Tues day as dozens of reporters and Okinawans filled the spartan Naha District Court chamber No. 201 for the opening of the trial. Prosecutors gave a graphic account of the crime, saying it began on the afternoon of Sept. 4 when Gill, Harp and I^edet were out cruising in a rented car. The rape was Gill’s idea, prosecutors said. First the three men drove to a grocery story on a U.S. airbase, where they bought condoms and electrician’s tape. Next they went to a nearby town in search of prey, prosecutors said. That search ended at about 8 p.m., when a 12- year-old girl stepped out of a neighborhood sta tionery store where she had gone to buy a note book for school. While Gill waited in the car, the prosecutors said, Harp approached her as though to ask direc tions, and before she could answer Ledet grabbed her from behind. Ledet and Harp allegedly shoved her into the car and bound her with the tape as Gill drove down a remote road surrounded by fields of sugar cane. Gill confessed to raping the girl and then dumping her there before returning to his base. What’s Up Wednesday Roadrunners: All runners of all aces are welcome to join us for 2-4 nile fun run at G.
