Page 12 • The Battalion Wednesday • November 8,1<> Day-care Continued from Page 1 building for quite some time. The Student Senate in recent years has passed two resolutions supporting the establishment of a day-care center on campus. The Faculty Senate passed a resolution in December 1994 calling for a child-care center. In October, 17 A&M architecture stu dents presented their designs for a cam pus day-care center. Boenig said the involvement of differ ent parts of the University community is a definite plus. “It’s good that this is going through a united front,” Boenig said. "This is bring ing together people from a lot of different aspects of campus.” Boenig said interested students should not be bashful to voice their concerns. “In my years here at Texas A&M, I don’t think this has been more of an issue than now,” he said. “If the students sup port this. I’d like to hear from them. And on the other hand, if students don’t ap prove of this, I want to hear that, too.” This child care forum may not be the last. Hay said that SOTA and the student life department are considering two to three more forums in the spring. Israeli Cabinet meets to discuss security lapses surrounding assassination □ Police believe the assassin is a member of the outlawed anti-Arab group Kahane Chai. JERUSALEM (AP) — The man in charge of guarding Israeli leaders and two top police officers may lose their jobs today when the Cabinet meets to discuss security lapses sur rounding the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. A preliminary report by the Shin Bet internal security service found there were too few bodyguards sur rounding Rabin just before he was shot at a peace rally in Tel Aviv, and that unauthorized people were al lowed to get too close, security sources said. The report also suggested Rabin’s bodyguards, who work under the Shin Bet, might have been indoctri nated to focus on potential Arab as sailants, and thus were inadequately prepared for the possibility of attacks by Jewish extremists. Police are investigating whether the confessed assassin, Yigal Amir, was part of a right-wing conspiracy. Police believe his brother. Hagai Amir, is a member of the outlawed anti-Arab group Kahane Chai. Although Yigal Amir has shown no remorse, calling Rabin an enemy of Israel for turning over land to the PLO, his family begged forgiveness from Rabin’s widow and all Israelis. “A great calamity has befallen us and the people of Israel with the as sassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, may his memory by blessed, by our son,” the family wrote in a letter to Leah Rabin that was read early today on Israel Radio. . Mrs. Rabin had said earlier she would consider such an apology to be too little, too late. In interviews Tuesday, she accused right-wing politicians of creating the climate of hate that encouraged the assassin — a charge bitterly rejected by opposi tion leaders. At a Jewish seminary in Kfar Tapuah, an anti-government strong hold in the West Bank, students had already begun paying homage to the gunman. Drawings on a bookstand showed pictures of Rabin and his suc cessor, Shimon Peres, both dangling from gallows. Underneath was the inscription, “Yigal Amir lives.” Such activities once would have been dismissed as babble by a lunatic fringe. But now Israel’s leaders are taking the militants seriously, and began a sweep Tuesday to detain Jewish extremists. In Kfar Tapuah, officers went to the homes of several Kahane Chai members, but the suspects appar ently slipped away. Police reported ly also planned to detain four people from another militant Jewish settle ment, Kiryat Arba, but would not say whether anyone had been picked up. Justice Minister David Libai said he would propose changes in existing law to make it easier to prosecute militants for incitement, including possibly banning protests at the homes of elected officials and prose cuting people who praise Rabin’s as sassination. “We are looking for the fine line between freedom of speech and in citement,” said ministry spokes woman Etty Eshed. But today’s Cabinet meeting was to focus on the preliminary Shin Bet report on how Amir, a 25-year-old law student, was able to get close enough to Rabin to kill him Satur day night. Security sources said the report found that Rabin’s bodyguards failed to form a human shield around him when he left the peace rally, and unauthorized people were allowed in the stairway to the terrace from which Rabin spoke and in the adja cent parking lot. The report also found intelligence on Jewish extremists was inadequate. Israel’s Channel 2 TV said the Cabinet would decide today whether to appoint a panel with subpoena powers to investigate further. Police Minister Moshe Shahal is already promoting such a probe. The security sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the head of the VIP bodyguard unit and two high-ranking police officers are expected to lose their jobs. 13 TRY THESE TASTE-TEMPTING lEl !Li»M(§ajj “FOR STEAK LOVERS” # 1 Sirloin 29 oz.* $9.50 # 2 Ribeye 19 oz.* $9.95 # 3 Chicken Fried Steak* $5.95 'Served with french fries and Texas Toast. if Kitchen Independence K 1/4 mile South of Hwy. 390 on Hwy. 50, in Independence.
