IRVING (AP) — Deion will at least get to do Atlanta. Deion Sanders has been cleared by the NFL to play in Sunday’s game against the Fal cons even though the league has ruled his contract invalid, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday. “I have been assured by the league that they won’t try to keep Deion from playing in At lanta,” Jones said. “It will be great to finally have Deion in the lineup.” The NFL told Jones in a let ter last Friday night that the seven-year, $35 million contract is $1.39 million over the salary cap and therefore invalid. The NFL called again Tuesday to tell the Cowboys that Sanders can suit up. Jones said the NFL didn’t mention anything about Sanders playing for the rest of the year, but added, “They don’t have a case and we’ll still be playing Deion. They didn’t say about the remainder of the season. But the main concern I have is for down the road and not for 1995.” Sanders, who has been recov ering from ankle surgery since baseball season ended, will make his Dallas debut against one of his former teams, the Fal cons. Look for Sanders to play both offensively and defensively. He likely won’t return kicks. Coach Barry Switzer said “Deion at cornerback will allow us to do some things differently. On offense, he will get into the game (as a receiver). We’ve got four or five plays he can run.” Lady Aggies look to rebound against UH The Battalion Classified Ads Phone: 845-0569/ Fox 845-2678 Office: Room 015 (bosemenf) Reed McDonald Building 8> ‘AGGIE* Private Party Want Ads $10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandise is priced $1000 or less (price must appear in ad). Place Your Ad In The Battalion Call 845-2696 □ Darcy Wakaluk blocked 27 shots in registering his eighth career shutout. DALLAS (AP) — For the Dallas Stars to challenge in the Western Conference, coach Bob Gainey says he’ll need strong goaltending and sound defen sive play. The Stars got both Tuesday night as Darcy Wakaluk stopped 27 shots to register his eighth career jO .A JL shutout and Derian Hatcher led a stingy defense for a 3-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. “That’s exactly the kind of game our team has to play,” said Stars center Dave Gagner, whose sec ond-period goal gave his team a 2- 0 lead. “When we get great goal- tending and solid defense like we did tonight, we’re tough to beat.” Nikolai Borschevsky, Gagner and Todd Harvey got goals in each period and Hatcher had two assists as the Stars climbed to the .500 mark (3-3-2). Wakaluk (2-1-2) and the Dal las penalty killers turned away Buffalo seven times with the man advantage as Wakaluk continues to outplay No. 1 one goalie Andy Moog. “Our defense kept Buffalo on the perimeter and didn’t allow them second chances,” Wakaluk said. “As a team we’re playing sol id defense. It’s a team game, not! personal game out there.” Wakaluk, who started his cj reer with the Buffalo organize tion, had his last shutout against Anaheim last March. “That’s the kind of goaltend ing we need to win with,’ Gainey said. “Wakaluk’s the one who’s faced our problems and overcome them.” The game had been under way for only 1:25 when Borschevsky beat Buffalo goalie Dominik Hasek to the stick side with a 20-foot „ - _ d r i v e, i Borschevsky’s first goal of the season and first in a Dal las uniform. Der ian Hatcher had an assist on the goal, his career- high fifth straight game with an as sist. “It was a good way to start, Gainey said. “It looked like he caught Hasek off guard or maybe napping.” Buffalo’s penalty-killers were able to survive a two-man disadvantage for 1:30 of the second period but Dallas boost ed its lead to 2-0 with 2:08 to play in the period on Gagner’s team-leading sixth goal of the season. Gagner was behind the defense when took a lead pass from Hatcher, skated in alone and beat Hasek. The Stars padded their lead to 3-0 :48 into the third period on Harvey’s first goal of the season.
