The career backup quarterback had a miserable day in relief of the injured Stan Humphries, ending San Diego’s first four drives with turnovers, including three inter ceptions. Two of them set up touch down runs by Emmitt Smith as the Cowboys beat the Chargers 23- 9 on Sunday. Smith, the NFL’s leading rush er, was held under 100 yards for the second time in three games, but it hardly mattered. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Cary Blanchard’s fourth field goal, a 41-yarder with 2:36 left, lifted the Indianapolis Colts to an 18-17 victory over the 49ers. San Francisco (4-2) missed a chance to go ahead with 50 sec onds left when Doug Brien’s 46- yard field goal attempt went wide right. Earlier this season, the Colts (4-2) rallied from 21-point deficits to beat the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.
