DALLAS (AP) — The Rev. Derrick Harkins is excited about being among the black men from around the country planning to fill Washington on Monday for a peaceful protest against the negative stereotypes they constantly face. But for the Million Man March to have a lasting impact, Harkins said, the participants must bring the momentum and lessons of the gathering back home so they can continue working towards those goals every day. “The hope of the Dallas Organizing Com mittee, as well as all of those who are com mitted to this march, is that we will return to our communities with a sense of collective strength and resolve,” said Harkins, spokesman for that local committee. “We’ve already crystal lized many of the issues. When we return to Dallas, we’re talking about bring ing back a sense of empow erment and a sense of en actment. I know my church (New Hope Baptist Church) already is committed to taking the enthusiasm we’re talking about and putting it into action.” Dallas County Commis sioner John Wiley Price, also a local committee spokesman, estimated that several thousand men from the Dallas-Fort Worth area are headed to Washington. Harkins said at least 700 of them will be from Dallas. Houstonians also are expected to have a large contingent. Officials there estimate be tween 1,000 and 3,000 black men will be Ferrakhan making the trip this weekend. McLennan County Commissioner^ Gibson said he expects about 5O0p(i from the Waco, Killeen and Templearei; also join the march.
