By Kristina Buffin The Battalion The time has finally come, and Texas A&M Men’s Head Swim ming Coach Mel Nash is ready for nothing but success. Nash has been at A&M for 16 years and is ready to boast a na tional championship team. “I want to build a team that is competitive for the national championship,” Nash said. “With the people we have now and with two or three years of recruits, that goal will be realistic.” When Nash arrived at A&M in 1979, the swimming program was not a top priority in the Ath letic Department. However, Nash stuck with the program simply because he knew that his hard work would eventually pay off. “Because of not having the fa cilities, we did not even have enough recruits to be competi tive,” Nash said. “But I still had fallen in love with this place, so I passed on other opportunities and decided to wait for the facili ties.” The team is scheduled to move into the new natatorium located in the Student Recreation Center on Oct. 16. Nash began his swimming ca reer at Indiana University where he was a four-year NCAA All- American. His swimmers believe his collegiate career helps Nash to relate to any problems they may have. “He relates his own experience with each training situation,” se- ty. It was a big concern for me how personable a coach of a team was.” For as long as Nash has been a coach, he has never lost thede sire. Nash said that the past2i years, that he has been in coach ing, have passed qLiickly andhe I has enjoyed helping every ne* freshman I hat has comeintothe SE |cott, pitch vetei I the £ Clev Evan Zimmerman, The Battalion Head Men's Swimming Coach Mel Nash clocks a swimmer. nior co-Captain Scott DeWolf said. Junior co-Captain Robb Pantano chose A&M over other schools primarily because of Nash. Pantano said Nash’s com mitment to his swimmers is what to the program. progrj . bacKstroker as well,” Pantano said. “It is easier to relate to someone with similar characteristics in their personali- program. “It is kind of interesting Nash said. “It’s kind of a good news, bad news thing. The good news is that I see new fresh faces every year with new enthusiasm. The bad news is that I keep get ting older and I don’t understand their music anymore." During Nash’s career at A&M, 38 A&M swimmers have earned a total of 84 All-American awards. In 1985, the womens squad produced seven All-Ameri cans and finished llthattbe NCAA Championships. This year, for the first time since Nash has been at A&M, both the men’s and women's teams will have separate coach es. “At this point in time myca reer, at A&M has had some changes," Nash said. “Thene* facility will be a tremendous boost, and because of the separa tion of the programs it will be £ different job than before. Doe (Wagner) as the women’s coach has a different way to do things.’ Nash doesn’t see himself any where but at A&M in the nearfu ture. “I’m in a situation now where as a coach I am the most comfort able. I am shooting for an in creased percentage of interna tional and national awards, We have more kids this fall that are blue chips than in five years." six n lonsh: Af lout t Wok Vizq Ithre' 1 IMart llO le Cl Ithis leadi the ci (seats |the A De linthi tory | game Jo (three jSmili Gam SoccER:Matchup with UT has players ready Continued from Page 9 challenges that the Lady Longhorns’ style of play will offer. “They play a low-pres sure, counter-attacking style, which is a style that we’ve had trouble with,” said Guerrieri. “Their first emphasis is defense — ours is total attack. That makes for a unique confrontation.” As usual, A&M will look to their big offensive guns in sophomore and junior for wards Bryn Blalack and Kristin Koop. Blalack blazes into today’s match as the Central region’s third highest scorer with 14 season goals and 33 points scored. Koop has 11 goals thus far in ‘95 and is tied for fourth in the region with 27 total points scored. On defense, junior goal keeper Sunny McConnell has ^1 "They(Texas) play a style that we've had trouble with." — G. Hardly a day goes by when his uniform isn’t caked in dirt from head to toe. Biggie’s value to the team goes way beyond the impressive numbers he puts up. In an age of multi-million dollar con tracts, television deals and la bor disputes, his work ethic and desire just to play is refreshing to fans. Let’s face it, the Astros aren’t exactly the biggest draw in Houston. If the team loses Biggio, you’re talking about the beginning of the end of baseball in that town. McLane may find it tough to afford to keep Biggio. But the truth is, the Astros can’t afford to lose him. A player who can post All-Star offensive num bers, be a Gold Glove infielder and possess an intensity on the field unparalled in baseball is truly a rare commodity. If Jeff Bagwell is the heart of the Astros, then Biggio is the soul. His veteran leadership is irreplaceable. McLane may have financial problems right now, but he’s going to have to either bite the bullet or take some measure to fit Biggio in on the payroll. Today’s money woes may seem like a pleasant memory down the line if McLane alien ates Astros fans and players by losing Biggio. If he walks, it will be the most disastrous mis take made by the club since for mer owner John McMullen let Ryan skip town. Biggio wants to stay in Houston, and manager Terry Collins, the Astro players and the fans realize what he means to the team and to the city. Let’s just hope McLane does. sun his $ <ch ch {h ^ ^ {h *4^ *4^ *4^ ^4^ *4^ Nr ^r Nr Want to earn some CA$H ?
