Mill ,;'i WlllIlK 1111 li 1 « 11 min .'-I i Page 8 • The BATTALION Sports Friday • October 6,195j One of the strangest games in A&M football history produced the most unlikely of heroes Thursday in A&M’s virtual 28-24 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Senior backup quarterback Stormy Case, filling in for a benched Corey Pullig, connected on a 26-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Danny McCray to give A&M the victory with just 36 ticks left on the clock. Pullig committed error after er ror throughout the game, throw- Batt Sports Sega Shootout ing for five interceptions before fi nally being benched with 2:50 to go in the fourth quarter. Case saved the day for perhaps the single greatest performance ever recorded by A&M’s “Wreck ing Crew” defense. All told, the defensive unit racked up 15 sacks of Tech quar terback Zebbie Letheridge, includ ing an unheard-of eight by sopho more linebacker Trent Driver. Letheridge lost a total of 140 yards on the sacks. A&M’s offensive attack was spearheaded by Leeland McElroy who galloped for 154 yards on just 13 carries. The wide receiving corps was led by McCray, who caught four passes for 150 yards and scored twice. Although far from perfect at 3-of-lO for 81 yards, Case stunned the packed crowd at Jones Field which had reached a fever pitch only seconds before as Tech rallied all the way back from a 21-0 deficit. ‘SWC Champs’ still has nice ring The Battalion Classified Ads Phone: 845-0569/Fox 845-2678 Office: Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Building < o LLI CL GO ‘AGGIE* Private Party..Want Ads $10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandise is priced $1000 or less (price must appear in ad). I’m not sure if it’s because they lost at Colorado or because the team was idle last week or even a combination of the both, but the excitement is definitely missing. It seems like everyone I talk to lately feels disgust with the Aggie football play ers and especially coaches. Well, get over it! So, we were outscored at Colorado. So we no longer have a shot at the national championship. Does that give us the right to criticize the players and coaches — the same players and coaches that we were bragging about to anyone who would listen at the beginning of the season? I’ll admit that I too am dis appointed that our hopes for a national championship are no longer. But I am still excited that we have a chance for the Southwest Conference Cham pionship and post season play. Don’t forget that our own Leeland McElroy is still a ma jor contender for the Heisman Trophy. I know that there are skeptics out there who think that after our unfortunate outscoring at Colorado, Lee land doesn’t have a chance. But I believe he does. He’s still one of, if not the best, running backs in the country. A SWC championship might not look as impressive as a national championship, but it’s still a championship. Yes, it would be nice to have the title of national champs, but I am proud of the fact that we are one of the best teams in the nation, regardless if we’re first or the eighth. I realize that the blame must be put somewhere. And it seems that most of the time it’s put on quaterback Corey TYillig. I am beginning to believe that I am one of the few peo ple who thinks that Pullig is the one who can lead us to an other SWC championship. He’s not a flashy player, bat he can win. He’s proven this and his stats can back it up. He is on pace to break even passing mark in the A&M record book, and he is tied with Nebraska’s Tommie Fra zier as the winningest active quarterback in the nation. Yet he remains to be one that most A&M fans love to bad mouth. Now that the Colorado game is behind us, the Aggies are looking to bring another Southwest Conference cham pionship to A&M, the last SWC championship before they join the Big 12. When he misses, he does not dwell on it, he sim ply goes on.” The pressure that certain situations create, such as a game-winning field goal, are actually fun for Bryant. The more on the line, the better. “I perform better under pressure,” Bryant said. “It is fun. My philosophy is to nev er be intimidated and never "I have all the confi dence in the world." — Kyle Bryant A&M place kicker back down.” Now that Bryant is healthy, Slocum has a chal lenge for him. Slocum wants to have one player for both field goals and kickoffs. He believes that Bryant is ready to take on this task, and it will only make him bet ter overall. “I want one guy for both jobs,” Slocum said. “Now that he’s over his injury, we want him to compete for the job. It keeps him in tune with the game. “It gives him more respon sibility and he wants it.” Confidence is what it is all about for Bryant. With much faith in his ability, he feels that he will never have to worry about the misses, he will just celebrate his success es. “I’ve got all the confidence in the world,” Bryant said. “I have one shot to make or miss it. I never think I will miss, but when there’s nothing you can do, there is no reason to worry.” □ Both teams will host rant is seeded No.l and sopk- more Carlos Tori is No.3 in $2 tournaments this weekend. That’s why we started these tournaments.” The men’s tournament will have one flight for singles and one flight for doubles while the women’s tournament will have two flights for singles and doubles. We also want to see Monica Rebolledo. She’s been hitting the ball well. I’m real optimistic about oar team this year. I think we’re go ing to have a lot of depth on this year's team.” Kent said he is excited about the upcoming weekend. “It should be a fun time,’’ Kent said. “We get to see where we stand against the other teams.'
