The Battalion October 6, Field Continued from Page 1 to the seating would take longer. “We do not anticipate any of this construction will cause too many problems because we could probably get it to a par tially completed stage between seasons,” he said. “It wouldn’t be done, but it would be usable.” The plans are prompted in part by the move to the Big 12, which will combine the Big Eight conference and four teams from the disbanding Southwest Conference, Groff said. “We’re preparing for the move to the Big 12 and more marquee games,” he said. “The contests will be better in terms of the competition, which will be better.” Caliente Groff said there are other rea sons for expecting larger atten dance at Aggie games. “By not playing all our games in the state of Texas, more of our fans will come to College Station to see us play,” he said. “There are no statistics to show that, but I think it’s reasonable.” The stadium construction is still in its early planning stages, Groff said, and likely will not be gin for a couple of years. Tim Donathen, assistant vice chancellor of facilities and plan ning, said many alternatives were considered to make the horseshoe section, which was built in the 1920s, more conve nient for the fans. “They looked at whether the field could be adjusted, raised, lowered, moved over,” Donathen said. “But ultimately they decid ed the greatest improvement would be achieved by developing end zone seating.” Additional plans under consid eration involve the transplanting of the Omar Smith Tennis Center to West Campus to allow for the construction of two new grass practice fields for football. “That sport (tennis) will prob ably need a new complex, proba bly near the new Sports Rec Center,” Donathen said. The current grass practice field will be changed to artificial turf to allow the team to practice in inclement weather as well. The Department of Kinesiology, which uses the artificial turf on Kyle Field, will use the turl practice field as well. Payne said the 12th Man Foundation is planning on rais ing all the funds for the project, but is waiting for definite plans right now. “We’re prepared to try to as sume that responsibility,” he said. Continued from Page 1 by a popular Tejano band, David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, and dancing will go on until 1 a.m.” Ro driguez said. “The band is pretty well-known in His panic society.” April Arias, Hispanic Journalists Association president and a senior journalism major, said HJA will be running a game booth. “We have been involved for the past two or three years and always have a game booth,” Arias said. “I hope there will be a lot of people because we want the community involved.” Other day activities will include a tortilla toss and a jalapeno eating contest. There will also be pony rides, face painting and a clown. “Everyone is invited because this is not just for Hispanic students,” Rios said. “We want peo ple to be involved and get a taste of Hispanic heritage.” Tickets will be available at the recreation cen ter and at the Tampico restaurant.
