Consistent NFL Refs Needed: Apply Within T [here’s should be a new ad vertisement in every ma jor newspaper across the country: “NFL officials wanted to make important calls in big games. Must be able to count to 12 consistently. Contact Paul Tagliabue, NFL Commissioner 1-800-12-COUNT.” Yes, that’s right, it’s football season, and that means it’s time to start the annual gripe session about the lack of quali ty officials in the NFL. This year seems to have tak en a especially humorous turn. In a Sept. 24 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota kicker Fuad Reveiz missed a 48-yard field goal late in the first half. Line judge Ben Montgomery flagged the Steelers for having 12 men on the field. Even thouth two other officials dis puted Montgomery’s ruling and said they counted 11 men on the field, referee Gordon Mc Carter upheld the call. Reveiz got a second chance to kick, and with the five yard penalty he nailed the field goal from the 43-yard line. Heading into the locker room at halftime, Steeler head coach Bill Cowher was so irate that he took a picture showing there were only 11 men on the field during the missed kick and shoved into the McCarter’s pocket. Tuesday, the NFL fined Cowher $7,500 for his actions, and suspended the McCarter and Montgomery for a game apiece. The two officials will lose a total of $6,835 in salary. All of this begs the question: Who was wrong here? Cowher had a legitimate ar gument — an official made a bonehead call, and the Pitts burgh coach read him the riot act. Should he be fined for speaking the truth? Montgomery counted wrong, and McCarter overruled two other officials to uphold a wrong call. Should they be pun ished for their ignorance? Cowher should not; Mont gomery and McCarter should. It just doesn’t make sense to punish someone for telling the truth. Like Cowher said a cou ple days later, “two wrongs do not make a right.” Maybe the NFL should start being a more sensible league and drop its rules regarding public criticism of its officials. In this case, and it is not the first time, an official made a stupid call, and he deserved to be lambasted about it. But the league has held fast to its position of supporting its referees, and punished Cowher for doing what every football fan wanted to. Maybe the NFL, in its quest to be the favorite fan sport, should put the officials through the same grueling news confer ences that coaches and players take part in. Players and coaches are put on a platform to be slammed, bashed, beaten and raked over the coals for their perfor mances, so why not do the same for the officials who can have such an instrumental im pact on the game? Officials need to be more responsible for their calls. If they can back up their logic, then they shouldn’t be afraid to face the press. If they can’t, then they deserve whatever they get. The blind faith the league shows to its officials is anoth er example of how the NFL is becoming the dullest profes sional sport today. The NFL has already stolen the play ers’ individuality by banning celebrations. Now they want to force everybody to play by its restrictive rules. Those rules are: the offi cials are right, even when they’re wrong. You don’t scream, fight, complain or breathe on them hard, or the league will slap you silly with so many fines you’ll be able to collect welfare checks. Meanwhile, the officials get a slap on the wrist. If the league was really dedicated to improving the officiating, it might have started by fir ing Montgomery and Mc Carter. Or the league should teach them the right way to count to 12. Smith signs 3- year deal with Warriors □ The No. 1 pick signs contract for maximum allowed for rookies. MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Sure, his contract is small compared with the huge deals signed by No, 1 picks of the recent past. But Joe Smith figures more than $8 million for three years will be plenty to live on comfortably, Smith, the top pick in last June’s NBA draft, signed with Golden State on Wednesday and immediately joined other War riors at a mini-camp workout, Under the new salary scale for NBA rookies, the top draft pick is limited to a three-year deal worth from $7.11 million to $8.53 million. Smith reportedly got the maximum. That’s a fraction of the 10- year, $68.15 million contract top pick Glenn Robinson signed with Milwaukee last year or the 15-year, $74.4 million deal Chris Webber got from Golden State in 1993. “The amount of money I’m making now is a lot of money," said Smith, 20, who would have been starting his junior year at Maryland if he had not entered the NBA draft, “so I can’t really say I’m getting cheated.” The new rookie salary struc ture made negotiations extremely easy for Warriors general manag er Dave Twardzik, whose only complaint while joining Smith at a signing ceremony was that “he didn’t even buy me lunch.” The 6-foot-10, 225-pound Smith said he was glad the con tract was signed and that he can focus on basketball when the Warriors open training camp Fri day at San Luis Obispo. “There wasn’t much to dis cuss because of the signing situ ation,” Smith said. “So it was just time for me to sign my name on the bottom line.” Smith, who averaged 20.2 points and 10.7 rebounds a game during his two years at Maryland, was accompanied- as always — to the ceremony by his mother, Letha, who will move from Norfolk, Va., to live with her youngest child during his first year as a pro. The Smiths, who have been looking for rental apartments in the San Francisco Bay area, are not seeking anything too luxuri ous. Aggies sweep Cougars in 3 □ The A&M Volleyball Team is off to its best start in history. Staff and Wire Reports The 22nd-ranked Texas A&M women’s volleyball team (11-1, 2- 0) was looking to leave their mark on the Southwest Confer ence Wednesday night with a de feat of the University of Houston (7-5, 1-2), the team that prevent ed them from winning the SWC crown last year. In only one hour and 12 min utes, the Lady Aggies accom plished that goal with a 15-2, 15- 12 and 15-5, at Hofheinz Pavil ion. Sophomore outside hitter Kristie Smedsrud led the Lady Aggies with 15 kills and a .464 hitting percentage. Senior Suzy Wente continued her roll towards the A&M all-time assist record with 42 against the Lady Cougars. Sophomore Cindy Vander- Woude led the team with 11 digs and two service aces. Defense was the key to the Lady Aggies win. A&M held the Lady Cougars to only 17 points and forced UH to commit 22 errors. The Lady Aggies are off to their best start in history and this is the first time that A&M has de feated the Cougars in Houston. It is also the first time since 1985 that the Lady Aggies swept Hous ton in three games. The next opponent for the Lady Aggies will be the Lady Raiders at G. Rollie White Coli seum on Saturday.
