Meanwhile, two members of College Republicans are pursuing a new strate gy to obtain student feedback. Matt Murphy, a senior economics ma jor, and Jeff Livingston, a senior electri cal engineering major, announced a pro posal to find out student reactions on multiculturalism. “Something I hate to see happening, which is happening, is that students are feeling their opinions are being misrepre sented and we going to try and get a student referendum to poll the students opinion on multicul turalism,” Livingston said. In order to get the ref erendum passed, 10 per cent of the student body must sign a petition form and the election commit tee chair has to approve the referendum. The referendum is a stu dent initiative and is not sponsored by an organization. “I think it will work out better because the referendum doesn’t need to come across as political, biased or one sided,” Livingston said. Gulf coast braces for Hurricane Opal PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — Hurricane Opal raced towards the northeast Gulf Coast late Tuesday, ; threatening areas still re covering from Hurricane Erin with deadly 115 mph winds and heavy rain. The storm's northeast pace quickened from 11 to 21 mph within hours, meaning landfall could oc cur Wednesday afternoon. Weather rather than midnight. Panama City was the most likely target for Opal’s eye, forecasters said. “By far this is the biggest storm this year for Florida,” Joe Myers, state director of the Division of Emergency Management, said late Tuesday. “It’s the biggest storm for Florida since Hurricane Andrew.” Residents already weary of the busy hurri cane season embarked on what has become the rou tine practice of boarding up their homes. At least 10 people died and 20 were missing in Mexico after Opal passed over the Yucatan peninsu la, causing flooding that drove more than 20,000 people in Campeche state from their homes.
