Both are respected interna tionally, as well as in that in significant portion of the United States beyond the Texas border. Slogans on T-shirts do not a “world class university” make, nor does sheer size or a top ten football ranking. Lasting reputa tion rests on academic excellence. Recreational sports and special event centers do not compensate for a library that ranks near 50th among universities. Is education, the primary concern here? The College Republicans need a project, and l suggest lobbying for library funding. A second goal might be setting out-of-state fees at in-state levels. A&M could set an enlightened example for state universities and strike a blow against the stultify ing provincialism that pervades this “world class” institution. M.C. Wilheit Graduate Student •The actions of College Repub licans have shown themselves to be true to what I feared. I was a member last year, but didn’t re new my membership this year be cause of their radical views. College Republicans is an out standing club in gaining voter turnout and participating in many other positive activities. I feel that expressing such rad ical conservative views (as the posters and now this), is being not only insensitive, but rude. 1 wish the College Republican’s wouldn’t have taken these steps. The actions cross lines from being strong ideologically to simply be ing blatantly argumentative. I also agree with Dr. Ray Bowen, A&M president, when he comments, “The only real issue I think is completely relevant here is that they did violate our fund raising policy.” Regardless of the outcome of the issue, a segment of College Republican's are not very conser vative. I urge you to read the points made carefully by both sides, flighting for an opinion is okay. Coming across an abused organization is not. •I read Michael Landauer's Sept. 21 column and almost wept with joy. As a very moderate Re publican, I was disgusted at the actions of the College Republi cans. I have refused to be a part of that organization because of its right-wing policies and ideologies. It seems that all College Re publicans do is blast liberals. This latest incident of political inepti tude is another example of this misguided thinking. Personally, I have never heard of a time in American history in which one group was totally cor rect on all of its assumptions about society. In fact, the best ideas and greatest achievements have been made through compro mise and cooperation. Instead of ignoring the ideas and suggestions of the Democrats and liberals, the ultra-conserva tive wing of the GOP should lis ten and work with others to de velop courses of action that con sist of common sense and fair ness, not fear and ignorance. As a Republican, I am im mensely tired of being labeled as insensitive, greedy and uncaring. Therefore, I would like to thank Landauer for his insightful column that said the right things. I would also like to reaffirm my devotion to the Republican Party, despite the actions of a select wing of the great institution. Sarah Lewis Class of ’98 •I find it ironic, yet very fit ting, that the same day Michael Landauer writes about how most Republicans do not support the College Republicans, Rodger Lewis, county chairman of the lie- publican Party, writes in support of the constitutional rights of the College Republicans. Also, just a few days ago, the State Republican Executive Com mittee passed a resolution in sup port of the College Republicans. In addition, Landauer’s charge that the College Republicans are “Liars, cheaters, racists and fas cists” is straight out of the knee- jerk liberal handbook. 1 suggest that Landauer join the Democrats, because his col umn is yet another example of why The Battalion might as well be the official newsletter of the Democratic Party. Dolan, 151 Tfemont Street, Boston, MA 02111. related to my dissertation, I came across evidence of what I can only describe as academic terrorism: key pages and whole articles had been ripped out of journals of sev eral of the references 1 was look ing for. Not only is this frustrat ing, but it demonstrates a men tality that I have no patience for. Those of you who do this, or contemplate doing this mindless vandalism, should know that your actions are extremely de structive and selfish. It isn’t anything malicious like people stealing books or beating the copy ma chines. Students are using the study area for socializing. This upsets me because I go to the li brary to get away from that. The library is a place that you should be able to count on to pro vide a quiet study environment. The dorms do not provide this. There are designated areas for group study where you can talk. If you are going to use the library, be courteous to those of us who need quiet to study. Jennifer Eichhom Class of ’98 At a difficult time, Corps touched all I am writing to express my thanks to Texas A&M University, the Corps of Cadets and Company L-l for the spirit and traditions they uphold. On Sept. 18, I attended the fu neral of an L-l cadet's father who had passed away suddenly. After a six-hour trip from Col lege Station to Haskell, Texas, 25 members of Company L-l arrived at the funeral in full uniform to support their friend and his fami ly during this difficult time.
