Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M women’s volleyball team (2-1) traveled to North Carolina this week end to face the University of North Carolina (6-2), Louisiana State University (5- 2) and Duke University (1-5) and came away with three con vincing wins. The Lady Aggies defeated North Carolina in Chapel Hill,15-4, 15-10 and 16-14 on Friday night. Leading the way for A&M was sophomore outside hitter Kristie Smedsrud who had 17 kills and 10 digs. Senior setter Suzy Wente con tinued her run toward breaking the Southwest Conference assist record by registering 24 assists. Sophomore Farah Mensik had 21 assists although she only played in two games. On Saturday, Mensik began her assist rampage against LSU with 50, while helping the Lady Aggies defeat the Tigers in Durham, 15-0, 15-5, 15-6. Senior outside hitter Andrea Williams led the team with 11 digs while freshman Stacy Syko- ra led the team with 16 kills and a .750 hitting percentage. A&M finished their road trip with a win over Duke, 17-15, 14- 16, 17-15, 15-7. Williams led the team with 14 kills and 17 digs. Wente did not play against LSU or Duke. Mensik made up for her ab sence by leading the team with 69 assists against Duke. Mensik’s previous assist career high was 20 against the University of Geor gia last season. The Lady Aggies hope to use the momentum they built this weekend when they begin SWC play Wednesday against Baylor University in Waco. Staff and Wire Reports The 14th-ranked Texas A&M women’s soc cer team (3-2) was upset by the University of Alabama (2-2), 3-1 in front of 558 at the Aggie Soccer Complex on Friday. The loss to Central Region rival Crimson Tide was the second consecutive loss for the Lady Aggies. The loss also marked the Lady Aggies first home loss in the program’s three year history. Crimson Tide midfielder Ashley Kirkland scored the first goal in the first half. Sophomore forward Taylor Eubank scored a goal just six minutes later to put Alabama up 2-0. Sophomore forward, B r y n Blalack scored the only Lady Aggjp goal on a penalty kick just before the end of the half. In the second half, the Lady Aggies tried to close the gap recording 13 shots but Alabama’s goalkeeper Amy Pseja kept them out of the net. Kirkland sealed the victory for the Crimson Tide with her second goal of the match with only four minutes left to play. A&M will begin Southwest Conference play on Monday when they will face the Texas Christian University Lady Frogs at the Aggie Soccer Complex. Rangers beat Tigers, 5-0 DETROIT (AP) — Roger Pavlik, pitch ing on three days’ rest, struck out a sea son-high 12 and combined on a three-hit ter as the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 5-0 Sunday, their seventh win in eight games. Will Clark and Juan Gonzalez drove in two runs each for the Rangers, who began the game two games behind Seattle in the AL wild card race. Pavlik (9-9) moved up a day to replace Bob Tewskbury, who was scratched Friday because of a sore hamstring. Pavlik allowed three hits in seven innings and struck out two before Roger McDowell finished with perfect relief. Chris Gomez and Tony Clark struck out three times each against Pavlik, whose ca reer high is 13 against Seattle in 1993. Tigers rookie Jose Lima (2-8) struck out a career-high nine and allowed three hits in six innings. Clark hit. RBI singles that scored Otis Nixon in both the first and third innings. Nixon beat out a bunt single against John Doherty in the eighth and stole second for the second time in the game. Clark was in tentionally walked and Gonzalez hit a two- run double. Texas added a run in the ninth on a squeeze bunt by Benji Gil. Texas finished the season 25*20 against the AL East, the sixth straight year the club was .500 or better. Warrick Dunn, RB, Florida State: Rushed for 101 yards on nine carries, scored three touchdowns Season totals: 405 yards, five touchdowns on 30 carries. Danny Kannell, QB, Florida State:Completed 28 of 32 passes for 381 yards and six touchdowns. Season totals: 72-86 for 861 yards and nine touchdowns.
