The other showed wide re ceiver Riley Washington at practice in a prisoner outfit, complete with ball and chain. Phillips is under NCAA in vestigation for allegedly driving a 1995 Mustang convertible in the offseason that he did not buy, and Washington will stand trial on a charge of attempted second-degree murder. Oh, Phillips was also arrest ed Sunday for allegedly beating his ex-girlfriend. He was kicked off the team by Osborne. Not to rub salt in the wounds or any thing, but with Phillips remov ing himself from the Heisman race, Leeland McElroy is look ing even better. Warrick Dunn, Florida State’s shifty tailback, is McEl roy’s closest competition right now. Dunn had 180 yards and two touchdowns against Clem- son this past weekend. Of course, neither one of them has had a week similar to Navy quarterback Chris McCoy, who set a Midshipmen single-game total offense record with 398 yards versus SMU. hunt for the playoffs despite the fact that they are both just a notch or so above .500. Five bucks says that the Little Iveague World Series team from Taiwan could give them both a game. Taiwan has better pitch ing, anyway. It has been said before, and it needs to be said again. Some body needs to slap some grass on Kyle Field. Turf bad, grass good. Texas Christian, Michigan and Oklahoma tore up their car pets and put in grass a few years ago. Alabama, California, Missouri and a few others switched over before this sea son. The revenue generated from parking tickets alone would be enough to convert Kyle Field to the natural stuff and add one of those newfangled, retractable roof things. Maybe that’s what this new general use fee in crease is all about. Employment Opportunity 100 K First Year. Voted #1 business opportunity in America 3 times in last 2 years. I wasn’t a big fan of this ma jor league baseball wild card business — I thought it would make a boring season even worse. But I take it all back now because somehow the Rangers and the Astros are still in the So Jerry Jones sold his first three grandchildren to bring Deion Sanders to Dallas. I knew it was going to happen, and you knew it was going to happen. Everybody keeps wondering if Deion is worth all the dough. Well, it’s like my Uncle Roscoe used to say, “You cain’t be scart to break the bank goin’ after the best, ‘cause you ain’t gonna be happy with no second- rate somethin’ or other.” Of course, maybe Roscoe isn’t the best man to quote because he was talking about liquor, and we haven’t heard from him since those big men in the white coats came and got him off the roof that night. The question became an in terrogation of Jones and Sanders at a Cowboys’ celebra tion news conference. Jones said his doctors told him there were 15 players on the Cowboys who had worse an kle problems than Sanders. But he quickly added, “I want Deion to have his physical condition in the best shape. This is not a big deal. The ankle is a non-issue for me. His toler ance for pain is well known.” Sanders attacked any thought he should be rushed into action before he was ready. “When I step on the field I want to be 110 percent,” he said. “I’m not a full speed. I can’t cut. If I’m limping on the baseball field I know what it will be in football. I know what I can’t do.” Sanders, who hurt the ankle in the spring when playing for the Cincinnati Reds, said he will undergo arthroscopic surgery as soon as the San Francisco Giants are eliminated from the playoff picture. Dallas particularly wants him on the field for the Nov. 12 meeting with the defending Su per Bowl champion San Fran cisco 49ers. “I want the ankle to be the best it can be,” he added. “I want to give my best when I represent the Dallas Cowboys. If I score after a touchdown I want to be able to dance and have the ankle hold up.” Cowboys players want Sanders as quickly and wide re ceiver Michael Irvin said “he hurt it during baseball season, let him get it fixed during base ball season.” Sanders, loaded down with gold jewelry and wearing a blue pin-striped suit, a Cowboys cap, and a shirt collar with “Prime Time” on it, had the crowd laughing when he joked he could have squeezed more mon ey out of Jones if his mother, Connie Knight, had quit saying she wanted her son in Dallas. “I kept telling her, ‘Mom, cool it, you’re costing me money,”’ Sanders said. 01FT COLORADO B R E JANUARY 2-15. 1996 K S 7 HI6HTC STEAMBOAT BRECKENRIDGE ^]S8 VAIL/BEAVER CREEK 7 pictures are being taken NOW!
