Continued from Page 3 This album is a smart showcase of the range she has demonstrated in previous al bums. For example, Pirates and Flying Cowboys were both studio, large-cast al bums. She performs several songs from this period, like “Flying Cowboys,” without all of the instrument ion, but seems to pull a large sound out of her hat anyway. Pop,Pop, however, which came after her first three al bums, was Jones and a small jazz ensemble. This setup lent itself well to her spontaneous style, just as the live retrospec tive of Naked Songs allows Jones to jam a little and play it up with the audience in tow. Tunes like “Coolsville,” one of the best tracks, prove that Jones’jazz instinct is as strong as her gift for songwriting. This is Rickie Lee Jones — she is a true artist, motivated not by money or marquees, but by music. During a concert Jones gave at Northwestern Univer sity two years ago with just her guitar, she stopped and | started several songs, trying to achieve the perfect’ sound. While there is no stopping Naked Songs, it comes close to capturing that ‘sound’Jones works for and often achieves. PEOPLE IN THE Poll explores kids' name recognition Nelson NEW YORK (AP) who?
