The Battalion CLASSIFIEDS To place an ad, phone 845-0569 SA VE LIKE CRAZY Now twice a week: Every Tuesday and Wednesday in The Battalion Page 10 • The Battalion Landauer Continued from Page 9 So maybe we shouldn’t be so amazed. Maybe we should be happy for them. Considering that most people never have a chance to live out their dreams, we should bly be envious. But eyes are also watching Ripken for the simple power of the statistics. If it was a record held by anyone other than Gehrig, Rip ken’s moment tonight would still be just as amazing. We want to see Ripken get this record because he deserves it. He is not out to break a record as much as he wants to serve as an example. "It just means that I think it’s important to go out there and play. I’m proud of what the streak has become, but not for the same reason everyone else is,” he said in an AP story. “I think it’s important for your teammates to be able to count on you being in the lineup, and that’s what I’ve been able to do over these years.” Ripken’s is an attitude Gehrig could relate to. Ripken’s attitude is one that should be shared by all of us. He has found fame with his streak, but he has found the streak by sticking to a simple set of values. Baseball needs Ripken to break this streak. America needs to see that hard work and simple determi nation pay off. We can look to his streak and not only see that dreams are at tainable, but also that they can be reached through simple tradition al values that Gehrig himself would have hoped to see in a mod em athlete. Gehrig deserves and will al ways have our respect, but tonight, let’s offer Ripken more than simple congratulations, let’s offer him our thanks. Georgandis Continued from Page 9 Perhaps the most amazing thing about Gehrig is that he loved baseball so much that he made it his top priority, even above his own health. On May 2, 1939, Gehrig re moved himself from the Yankees’ starting nine, just eight games into the season. On the Fourth of July, Yankee Stadium overflowed with people at Lou Gehrig Day. Every living Yankee great was there, includ ing Ruth, who had not spoken to Gehrig since 1934. That day, Gehrig spoke to the hushed crowd in sobs, and be came perhaps the first dying man to ever proclaim himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Gehrig had amyotrophic later al sclerosis, a disease that re mains incurable to this day. He died in 1941. Today, Ripken is a beacon in the night to all those baseball fans who have seen their game deteriorate steadily over the past 10-15 years. Ripken is one of a . handful of superstars who have stayed with one team throughout their careers. Ripken, along with the Cardi nals’ Ozzie Smith, the Padres’ Tony Gwynn and the Yankees’ Don Mattingly, is one of the few players in today’s game who would have fit into the world of Lou Gehrig. All are hard-work ing team players who put indi vidual accomplishments far be low team success, yet achieve great honors anyway. Ripken has earned all of his success — a string of Gold Glove Awards, two Most Valuable Play er Trophies and a World Series Ring — by dedicating himself to the game. Nothing Lou Gehrig ever did has made Cal Ripken a better player. Yet history has pushed the two together, just as it has done to Ruth and Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax and Nolan Ryan or Michael Jordan and Julius Erv- ing. It is likely that Gehrig used baseball to keep him going through his final years of life. He was aware of his own deteriorat ing body long before anyone else caught on to it, but continued to play day after grueling day. Ripken, at age 35, is still amazingly healthy, a rare physi cal specimen for any time period. He has been blessed by never having to endure the pain Gehrig felt for so long. But by taking a day off today, and becoming tied for first with “The Iron Horse” for all time, Ripken could do something even greater than anything baseball has to offer. He could give the nation a chance to remember one of its greatest heroes, from a time much like today, when one was desperately needed. Gehrig was that hero. Ripken could be that hero.
