By Tara Wilkinson The Battalion Freshman academic scholarship recipients were welcomed to Texas A&M yesterday at the 1995 Academic Scholarship Convocation and challenged to set high goals. This year 700 freshmen, who have each been awarded a 4-year academic scholarship, were invit ed to the convocation organized by the Office of Honors Programs and Academic Scholarships. Dr. Sallie Sheppard, associate provost for un dergraduate programs and academic services, said the convocation is the culmination of 18 months of recruiting. “It is one of the most exciting events of the new school year because in one room we have all of the holders of the prestigious 4-year schol arships,” Sheppard said. In attendance were recipients of FVesident’s En dowed Scholarships, President’s Achievement Award Scholarships, Terry Foundation Scholar ships, Lechner Scholarships, McFadden Scholar ships and Aggie Spirit Award Scholarships. Dr. Dale Knobel, executive director of the honors program, said the purpose of the pro gram is to introduce the scholarship students to each other, to congratulate them and to inform them of their responsibilities as scholarship holders. “We simply want to say, ‘Remember, you have earned this, but it is a privilege that many students don’t have,’” Knobel said. Dr. Ray Bowen, Texas A&M president, ered welcoming remarks and a messagtl freshman scholarship students. Other speakers were Patrick Conwajl Council president; Dr. Robert Walker, vjl ident for development; and Nancy Joe D| sociate dean of the College of Liberal Art Conway, a scholarship recipient himsij he spoke to the freshmen about settij reaching high goals. “I’m going to give them some helpf about being successful,” he said.
