By Lisa Nance The Battalion Ask Texas A&M wide receiv er Chris Sanders what he thinks about being known as the most dangerous receiver in the Southwest Conference and you’ll see a smile cross his face almost as long as some of the passes he has caught. Sanders, a senior and out of Austin LBJ, was the team’s biggest surprise on offense last season as he led the team with a 19.2 yard per catch average and caught 22 passes for 422 yards and a team-high four touchdown receptions. Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum said Sanders will be even better this season. “I expect Chris Sanders to step up and really have a good season for us,” Slocum said. “He has great speed and has re ally developed as a player. Hopefully, he’ll be our deep threat and make some big plays.” Big plays are nothing new to Sanders. Last season, his 75- yard touchdown catch against Baylor was the team’s longest reception of the season. He also had the team’s only 100+ yard receiving day, grab bing four passes for 107 yards against Texas Christian Uni versity in the Aggies’ season fi nale. Against Louisville, Sanders turned the game around early in the fourth quarter with a 23- yard touchdown reception that gave the Aggies a 17-7 cushion in what had been a tight game. It was one of three catches to taling 75 yards that Sanders made in the game. With more big plays from Sanders this season, the Aggies could be well on their way to a national championship, and Sanders could be well on his way to earning postseason hon ors. When the topic turns to pres sure from being a key player on No.3 team in the nation, Sanders said he tries to keep everything in perspective. - “Ldon’t really feel-any pres- surejRhe said. “The coaches are doing a really good job of keep ing our heads straight. I think stuff like that (postseason hon ors) comes along with the team. When the team does well, then the individual honors will come. “If the team does well on of fense, I’ll get my honors. I’m just worried about trying to win right now. I’m not going to do anything individually that would hurt the team.” Sanders certainly will not have to make all of the big plays this season, considering who is lining up at the tailback position for the Aggies this sea- date Leeland McElroy. 'tun When asked about sharing the field with McElroy, Sanders said it is an honor and that be ing on the field with McElroy helps him. “Leeland on the field has re ally helped me more than any thing else,” Sanders said. “I feel good being on the field with Leeland. The more yards Lee land gets, the more it helps me out. If Leeland is getting his yards, then the defense is going to pack in and when the defense packs in, it’s a passing game for me.” Besides being a big-play re ceiver, Sanders is also the biggest receiver on A&M’s roster at 6 feet, 4 inches and 222 pounds. Sanders’ size and leap ing ability — his standing vertical jump is 39.5 inches — make it extra difficult for smaller cornerbacks to defend against him. Sanders came to A&M from Austin’s LBJ High School where he played both offense and defense. After his senior season, he was named to the Associated Press’ “Super Team” as an hon orable mention selection on de fense. Sanders came to A&M as a freshman in 1991 and was a backup wide receiver, playing in seven games. He contributed on special teams during the 1992 season and was redshirted in 1993. In his breakthrough season last year, he played in 11 games and had five starts. "I expect Chris Sanders to step up and really have a good season for us." •— /?. C.
