Nome’s (7-2) string of seven straight pitching decisions end ed with his shortest outing since May 12 when he also went, four innings in a no-deci sion against the St. Louis Car dinals. He allowed four hits Tuesday night, walked two and struck out one. Nome’s only other loss was May 28th when he went 6 1-3 innings in a 5-1 loss to Montreal. A season-high Astrodome crowd of 39,295, more than double the season average, turned out to see Nome’s first appearance in Houston but he couldn’t extend his win ning string. Drabek (6-5), who struck out nine, celebrated his 33rd birth day by stealing the pitching spotlight from Nomo. Some schools, most notably Nebraska, are opposed in the belief a championship game would lessen the chances of the league placing more than one school in a major bowl game. The championship game could knock the loser out of a major bowl bid and conceivably out of a chance to play for the mythical national champi onship, opponents argue. Tom Osborne, coach of de fending national champion Ne braska, has been particularly outspoken. “There is a lot of validity to what Tom Osborne has said,” Hatchell said. “It’s one more pressure on Tom Osborne.
