About 25 percent of stu dents at A&M are receiving scholarships from the financial aid department. One concern of the financial aid department is the rising costs of education, Lawson said. “In the last few years there has been a grant and loan imbalance,” Lawson said. “People are borrow ing more and getting less.” High costs have become more apparent in the past few years, Falks said. “In the 1991-1992 school year we had our students re ceiving about $30 million in federal loans,” Falks said. “This year that number will exceed $60 million.” There is normally about a 10- percent growth each year in the number of students who qualify for need-based loans, Falks said. All students can qualify for some type of aid, Falks said. Students who do not qualify for grants or scholarships can ap ply for loans. To receive financial aid from the University, students must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and a stu dent data form. After the Uni versity receives the information generated from the application, the financial aid department as sembles aid packages. According to the American Council on Education, more than six million college stu dents nationwide received fed eral student aid from 1993-94. More than half of the aid dis tributed is in the form of feder al student loans. m t# 111 EXTRA 33% OFF EXTRA 33% OFF EXTRA 50% OFF TAKE 25% OFF Entire stock misses and women’s swimwear and coverups.
