(AP) — Univer sity professors who get federal tax dol lars to do research also are putting their relatives through college at taxpayer ex pense and the schools are fighting a pro posal to eliminate the perk. Since 1991, four top universities have charged the government at least $17 mil lion to pay tuition for the daughters, sons, wives, husbands and same-sex do mestic partners of faculty working on federal research, according to the U.S. General Accounting Office. The four are the Massachusetts Insti tute of Technology, the University of Chicago, Stanford and Johns Hopkins. Of the faculty members whose relatives’ tuition was covered by the government, more than one-fifth earned over $100,000 annually, a GAO investigation found. More than half made more than $50,000 a year. The federal Office of Management and Budget has recommended that the gov ernment stop reimbursing researchers for their relatives’ tuition. The universities have filed objections. OMB officials said no date has been set for a final decision. Federal guidelines prohibit commercial institutions under federal contract from charging the government for tuition reim bursement. However, universities are still allowed to pass along the cost of faculty de pendents’ college educations to taxpayers. The four universities spent $53 mil lion from 1991 through 1993 on tuition reimbursement for all employees. The GAO said federal taxpayers cov ered $17 million. Atlantis, Mir separate □ The ships flew as a single craft for five days. Six more dock ings are planned over the next two years. SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) — Astronauts and cosmo nauts watched their ships part and fade into the blackness of space Tuesday in an orbital pirouette that ended five days of flying as a single craft. “We’re just shaking our heads at how quickly this has all gone by,” said the space shuttle Atlantis’ pilot, Charles Precourt. For a half hour, three craft hovered a few hundred feet from each other while hurtling around Earth at 5 miles a sec ond: the Russian Soyuz capsule with two cosmonauts, Atlantis with eight passengers, and the temporarily unstaffed Russian space station Mir. Both crews recorded the his toric moment on video and film, but the sun’s glare spoiled many of the pictures. Atlantis is due back at Mir in late October with another crew. Altogether, six more dockings are planned over the next two years as a prelude to the construction of an interna tional space station later this decade. And astronauts and cosmonauts already are talking of a shared trip to Mars. Cosmonauts Anatoly Solovyev and Nikolai Budarin began the undocking sequence by shoving off from Mir in the small Soyuz capsule and back ing away 300 feet. They took the only videotape and pho tographs of the world’s largest spacecraft in its entirety. On the shuttle, the push of a button released the hooks bind ing the two craft together. Springs gently eased Atlantis The Russian Mir Complex is a modular space station. "Mir" can be translated as “peace", “commune" or “world". The first module was launched in 1986. Soyuz and Progress ferry vehicles are routinely launched to Mir to deliver fresh crews and supplies. Kvant-1 Astrophysics module Length: 19 ft. (6 meters) Solar panels Kvant-2 Science Lib and personnel airlock Length: 41 ft. (12.4 meters) Launched: 1989 Technological laboratory and docking port for shuttles Length: 39 ft. (12 meters) Launched: 1990 U.S. space shuttle carries Spacelab and docking module Length: 122 ft. (37.3 meters) away from Mir and the craft slowly separated. At about that time, Mir be gan drifting off-course, possibly because of an on-board comput er failure. Russian flight con trollers ordered Solovyev and Budarin to hustle back to Mir; their Soyuz redocked safely. For nearly 1 1/2 hours, At lantis flew around Mir for pic ture-taking, then fired its thrusters 245 miles above South America to move into its own track. Atlantis launched with sev en occupants and will land Fri day at Cape Canaveral, Fla., Associated Press with eight. It is returning NASA astronaut Norman Tha- gard and Russian cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and Gen nady Strekalov, who had been living on Mir since mid-March. By the time Atlantis lands, the three will have spent 115 days in orbit; that’s a U.S. record for Thagard. Solovyev and Budarin, who flew up on Atlantis and replaced Thagard and his comrades, won’t come back until early Sep tember. They’ll return in the same Soyuz in which Thagard arrived, parachuting down in the Kazakhstan desert. Taxi & Courier drivers needed. Full & part-time posi tions. 822-9385. 9-4, Mon.-Fri. Health Tips Self exams help detect cancer By Heather Clark Special to the Battalion A recent health behavior survey showed that 56 percent of men at Texas A&M have never performed a Testicular Self Exam (TSE). A testicular self exam is important for the early detection of tes ticular cancer, especially in young men. The test should be performed on a monthly basis to detect small nodules or lumps can be found with a testicular self exam. Performance of the exam also helps men to become familiar with what their testicles normally feel like, so when an abnor mality occurs it is easily detected. For men ages 15 to 34, cancer of the testes is common. One of the first possible signs of testicular cancer is a slight enlargement of one of the testes and a change in its consistency. Because pain may be absent, monthly TSEs are important. Seminoma, the most common type of testicular cancer has a suc cessful treatment rate of nearly 100 percent. For further information on testicular cancer or other health-re lated issues, students can contact the Health Education Center, A.P. Beutel Health Center at 845-1341. CHEAP AEROBICS! Questions: Call Jen at 693-7733 Collided cargo ships pulled apart □ A Singapore flagged vessel spilled 93,000 gallons of fuel into the Gulf of Mexico. NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Two cargo ships were wrenched apart by tugboats Tuesday af ter being jammed together for three days since they collided in the Gulf of Mexico. The bow of the empty Greek freighter Alexia had been em bedded in the side of the Enif, a Singapore-flagged vessel carry ing 1,500 tons of steel. Salvage experts had been concerned because of heavy seas and rising wind, so crews worked through the night to cut away tangled metal, said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Jim Obernesser. The ships were finally pulled apart by tugs. Tugs were in place to stabi lize the ships, especially the Enif which could have listed dangerously after the vessels were separated, said Cmdr. Phil Glenn. Neither was in any danger of sinking, he said. The Enif spilled about 93,000 gallons of fuel into the Gulf of Mexico, but the Coast Guard said there was no imme diate environmental danger. Weems said salvage crews would remove the remaining fuel from the Enif, which has no power, before moving it to port. The ships collided Saturday about 70 miles south of New Orleans. No one was injured. After the collision, tugs had moved the ships to a site about 30 miles southeast of South Pass to keep them from drifting into nearby oil rigs. The cause of the collision was under investigation.
