The victory was the seventh straight for the Jazz, who finish with a franchise record 60 wins against 22 losses. The Rockets, the defending NBA champions, lost their last three games, including two to the Jazz, who they face Thursday in Salt Lake City in the first of a best-of-five series. Houston was playing with a patch- work lineup and without its top two scorers. Hakeem Olajuwon didn’t dress because of a stiff neck. Clyde Drexler suffered a sprained ankle in the first half and didn’t return after scoring just five points. David Benoit’s 3-pointer with 1:08 left took the steam out of a Houston rally and the Jazz then sank six straight foul shots down the stretch to put the game away. Jeff Hornacek had 21 points while Benoit added 18. Malone also con tributed eight assists. Vernon Maxwell came off the bench to lead Houston with 26 points. Maxwell, however, hit just eight of 23 shots and four of 14 from 3- point range. As a team, Houston tried 31 shots from behind the arc, hitting 10. The Jazz used a 17-2 spurt over 5:56 in the third quarter to build a 10-point lead after the game was tied at 51 at the half. Sam Cassell singlehandedly kept the Rockets in the game, scoring Houston’s first 12 points in the final quarter to close the Utah lead to 84-82. Utah went back up by six before a Maxwell 3-pointer with 3:11 left made it 92-90. That was as close as the Rockets got The Jazz record was second-best in the Western Conference and second in the Midwest Division behind San Antonio. Houston finished at 47-35, 11 games off their Midwest Division winning pace of a year ago. They were third in the division this year and sixth in the conference.
