some good outings, he has
been outstanding.”
Mitchell is third on the team
in strikeouts with 25 and has
only 8 walks.
“I’m trying to get my curve
ball back,’’ Mitchell said. “Ithas
been kind of off and on this sea
son. I need to get a sharper
break on my curve and need to
develop my change up. Some
times I just don’t have a feel for
it but it’s getting better.”
Mitchell’s confidence has
steadily grown despite getting
hit pretty hard earlier in
the season.
“I’ve gotten pretty lucky late
ly,” Mitchell said. “In the fall I
gave up four home runs in one
outing and the team gave me a
pretty hard time about that. It
hurts your confidence and it
took me about two or three days
to shake it off.”
Mitchell’s biggest accom
plishment this season was his
win against the University
of Houston at the beginning
of April.
“Houston was my best game
because it was a conference game
and I was able to pick up the
win,” Mitchell said. “Conference
games mean more even though 1
couldn’t throw my curve balls for
strikes. But I was able to pitch
for seven innings.”
Mitchell was drafted by the
Cleveland Indians in 1993 but
is not worrying about that far
ahead in the future; he has
more immediate goals.
“I would like to win the con
ference and be named to the
All-Southwest Conference team
but that is a goal of every play
er,” Mitchell said. “I thought
about playing for the Indians a
lot when I was in junior college
but coming to A&M has
changed my entire thought
process. Now I’ll play (in the
pros) if I can but I’m not going
to worry about it.”

NCAA bid for the second
straight year. After defeating
Michigan State at home in the
first round of the tournament,
the Lady Aggies traveled to
Ohio State University and were
eliminated by the Buckeyes,
who eventually entered the
NCAA Final Four.
Head coach Laurie Corbelli’s
team is already in their spring
session and is expecting big
things next season.
“We are in the spring season
with two juniors and all the rest
sophomores and freshmen, “ Cor-
belli said. “We’re going out on the
West Coast to some of my old
schools and teams and we’re
ready to whoop it up out there.”
Corbelli gave her team MVP
award to junior setter Suzy
Wente, who led the SWC in as
sists per game in 1994, as well
as setting four new school indi
vidual records and becoming
A&M’s all-time assist leader.
Also honored from the volley
ball team were senior Jennifer
Bronner as most improved play
er, freshman Kristie Smedsrud

nior Dana Santleben as best de
fensive player.
The Texas A&M women’s
basketball team enjoyed a fine
season under first-year coach
Candi Harvey. The team took
third place in the SWC and al
though they were looked over by
the NCAA selection committee,
the Lady Aggies were pegged as
the top seed in the Women’s Na
tional Invitational Tournament
in Amarillo.
The Lady Aggies went on to
win three straight games to take
home the NWIT crown, the first
SWC team ever to win the tour
nament. Along the way, junior
Martha McClelland surpassed
the 1,000 point total for her ca
reer, junior Kelly Cerny became
the all-time A&M in blocked
shots and guard Carey Owens
was named SWC Freshman of
the Year.
Junior point guard Lisa
Branch, named first-team All-
SWC was named as the Lady Ag
gies’ Most Valuable Player. The
most improved player award
went to sophomore guard Lana
Tucker, who also received the
best defensive player award.
The “Guts Award” went to ju
nior guard Bambi Ferguson who
has become a crowd favorite at
G. Rollie White Coliseum dur
ing her three seasons.
“This player is never without
her knee pads and is known for
her dives into the crowd and her
patented yell.” Harvey said.
Also taking home honors
were Shannon Etchberger as
MVP for cross country and diver
Jodi Janssen who was the high
est freshman finisher in the
SWC this season.
