(AP) — Ben Crenshaw, who last Sunday took one last lesson from his teacher Harvey Penick, won the Masters championship exactly a week after Penick died. Taming the treacherous Au gusta National greens with a confident putting stroke bol stered by Penick’s reassuring words, Crenshaw shot a final- round 68 to finish at 14-under- par 274, one stroke ahead of Davis Love and three ahead of Greg Norman and Jay Haas. As his final putt dropped on the last green, Crenshaw bent over and clasped his head with both hands, overcome with emotion. “I had a 15th club in the bag today and that was Harvey — Harvey Penick,” Crenshaw said. “I don’t know how I got through the week, I really don’t know,” he said. “It was an emo tional week. This place charges me up like nothing.” It was a slam-bang finish af ter the day started with 12 players within four strokes of Crenshaw and third-round co leader Brian Henninger. And it all turned, as al ways, on the tricky back nine at Augusta. The crunching blow came at No. 16 when, with Love safely in the clubhouse at 13-under, Crenshaw hit a brilliant 6-iron shot that showed great knowl edge of the course, hitting well right of the hole on the par-3 and curling down the slope to within 3 feet. He knocked it in for the birdie that put him at 14-under and rode that exceptional se quence to a 12-footer for birdie at No. 17. He played No. 18 safely and made a bogey. “I really don’t think there was any stopping Ben,” Love said. “He was driven. He was charged and obviously he is one of the greatest putters ever.” It was the second Masters title for the 43-year-old Texan, who won in 1984 and also has finished second twice and in the top 10 seven other times, certain proof he is one of the game’s best putters. Remarkably, Crenshaw had no three-putt greens in the tournament. Crenshaw, who went to Austin, Texas, on Wednesday for Penick’s funeral, saw the famed 90-year-old teacher Sun day, the day Penick died. “I had one last lesson with Harvey,” Crenshaw said earli er in the tournament. “He said, ‘Can you please get a putter and show me how you’re stroking that ball?’ And he said, ‘Now, I want you to take two good practice strokes and then trust yourself and don’t let that club get past your hands in the stroke.” Georgandis: The trials of intramural hoops Continued from Page 7 er intramurals teams. There was a lot of glaring at each other in that first game, plenty of bumping into each other(mostly by me since once I’m in the paint, I stay there until instructed to leave) and silent name-call ing. Somehow, we won 37-33. This was part of the pre season tournament that in volved all of the teams, re gardless of what class you were in. The next morning, a Saturday at that, we wan dered into the Read Building at the ungodly hour of 10 in the morning to play a team that was in the “B” league. That’s “B,” as in a lot Better than us. I knew it was bad when I put one in about 12 minutes into the game, looked up and saw that my basket had made the score 25-4. Take it upon yourself to figure out who had the four and who the 25. Some four dozen fast breaks later and our totally illogical quest of a perfect season had ended, 66-35. I, however set a new career- high with three points. Since then, we’ve gone 3-1, but the best part is, we’ve learned how to play as a team. Everyone has a role, a job he has to do if we’re going to win the game. When we all play as a team and do our jobs, we win. When we try to win the game by ourselves, we lose. But besides working to gether, we’ve grown into an on-the-court family. If an op posing player knocks one of our guards down, he’d better watch it next time he drives the lane. I certainly don’t mind picking up a foul to send a little message, and neither does anyone else on our team. Sometimes tempers do flare on the court, especially since our small forward has a penchant for knocking down at least one player per game (if it’s intentional or not is anyone’s guess.) But, all emo tions, good or bad, are what make the games so much fun. Our next game is sched uled for tonight. Once again, we’ll precariously balance our work and study schedules to somehow free up this hour- and-a-half of physical pain. Knees and backs will flare up with muscle straining pain, lungs and hearts will work double-time as we pant des perately for air and limits will be severely pushed. Intramural playoffs, ain’t nothing better. Baseball: Aggies move into top spot in SWG Continued from Page 7 The A&M pitching staff, the team’s Achilles’ heel last season, was dominating in the three-game set. The start ing rotation picked up all three wins and two complete games and the entire staff allowed just eight earned runs in 25 innings. The staff walked just six batters while striking out 16 men. Dallas Baptist, the No. 2- ranked team in the NAIA came into the weekend series with a 27-3 record on the season. While the Aggies took a non conference break this weekend, their place in the Southwest Conference standings im proved.as the University of Texas took a series from Texas Christian to give A&M the top spot in the league.
