Place Your Ad In The Battalion Call 845-2696 Football team catches spring fever, □ The Aggies are off probation and gearing up for the 1995 season. By Robert Rodriguez Thf, Bath align After being denied the South west Conference championship and a Cotton Bowl trip last year, the Texas A&M football team hopes to end the 1995 sea son with a F'iesta. The Aggies started spring workout drills last week with a team, which some college foot ball experts believe, is a nation al championship contender. The national championship game is scheduled to be played at the Fi esta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona. Head football coach R.C. Slocum said there is no added pressure placed on the team to win a national championship. “We go into every season try ing to win every game and try ing to play the best we can play in every game,” Slocum said. The Aggies will take a 23-game home winning streak into the upcoming season, the final year of Southwest Confer ence play. Junior linebacker Reggie Brown said the spring drills will help the Aggies accomplish their goals. “In these spring drills, we have to take the opportunities we have in order to become a better football team,” Brown said. “This will help us get that much closer to our goal of win ning a national championship.” Despite the bigger goals the Aggies hope to accomplish, Brown said the spring drills this year do not compare to last year’s drills. looks ahead “1 think last year was a lot tougher than this year's spring drills,” Brown said. “Spring drills are still not easy, but they are easier than last year.” Slocum said the Aggies have made some changes in the line ups in the spring workouts, which will help the A&M on both offense and defense. “At this point, we have moved Steve McKinney from defensive end to offensive guard and Koby Hackradt from guard to center,’ Slocum said. “Those are the two biggest changes we have made this year.” Some new faces have shown up in spring drills, donning the maroon and white for the first time. Among those are quarter hack Branndon Stewart, who transferred from Tennessee, and freshman quarterback Kevin Colon, who graduated from Deer Park High School early and enrolled in order to get a quick start on the backup quarterback position. Slocum said the spring drills will help get the Aggie machine going for the upcoming season. “In spring training, wetryto get the individual parts ready,' Slocum said. “At each of the po sitions, we are going to try to bring the parts along and put it together in the fall.” Slocum said he has been real impressed with his team in the spring drills. “I’ve been pleased withjylot of guys on this team,” Slocum said. “We are getting a great effort out of Leeland McElroy, and Corey Pullig is looking like what you hope a senior quar terback would(look) like. I’ve really been pleased with their progress.” The Texas A&M University Student Publications Board is accepting applications for Editor f The Battalion The Battalion Summer 1 995 Fall 1 995 Qualifications for editor of The Battalion are: Be a Texas A&M student with a minimum 2.0 overall and major GPR at the time of appointment and during the term of office; Have at least one year experience in a responsible editorial position on The Battalion or comparable daily college newspaper, OR Have at least one year editorial experience on a commercial newspaper, OR Have completed at least 1 2 hours journalism, including JOUR 203 and 303 (Media Writing I and II), JOUR 301 (Mass Comm Law) and JOUR 304 (Editing for the Mass Media), or equivalent.
