To Place Your Ad In The Battalion Call 845-2696 Q Two senior swimmers lead team to NCAA Championships. By Kristina Buffin The Battalion Texas A&M head swimming coach Mel Nash describes them as complete opposites. Anna LePoris is as Texan as you can get, and Jennifer Saul is a Yankee. LePoris’ talent is based on her strength, Saul’s is based on her finesse and hard work. What binds the two swimmers together is that this is their se nior year and they will be leading the Lady Aggies to the NCAA Championships in March. “Anna and Jennifer have been so much fun,” Nash said. “It will be hard to replace either one of them.” Saul, a psychology major from Avon Lake, Ohio, comes from a strong background in swimming. She earned All-American honors as a junior in high, school and shared the Ohio state 50-meter freestyle title the same year. As a junior at A&M, Saul earned honorable mention All- American honors in six events and finished 14th at the NCAAs in the 50-freestyle. “She is the hardest working female sprinter that I have ever seen,” Nash said. “She is not a wealth of physical swimming talent, but she makes up for it in her work ethic and focus.” LePoris, an exercise technolo gy major from Corsicana, was a two-time all-state selection at Corsicana High School and fin ished second in the 50-freestyle and 100-meter freestyle at the Texas state championships. LePoris had to be redshirted in her third year at A&M in or der to gain more experience. She was an honorable mention All- American in 1994. “She has had to catch up each year and redshirting her third year was very rare for swim ming,” Nash said. “As a fifth- year senior, she is very impres sive. It is rare to collect three lifetime bests at the Southwest Conference Championships after sitting out a year.” The Lady Aggies placed third in the SWC Championship last weekend behind the University of Texas and Southern Methodist University. At that meet, LePoris and Saul had career performances. LePoris collected her best times ever in three events. She finished fourth in the 100-freestyle (:50.72), seventh in the 50-freestyle (:23.96) and ninth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:49.79). LePoris’ times in the 100-freestyle and 200-freestyle rank her second in the A&M all- time records. “I am very pleased and excit ed,” LePoris said. “These were my best times, and I am more excited than sad that this was my last meet.” Saul finished fourth in the 50-freestyle (:23.37) and seventh in the 100-freestyle (:51.42). She ranks second on the all-time list for the 50-freestyle. "Overall, I am really happy,” Saul said. “I was fast enough to reach my goal.” Both LePoris and Saul quali fied for NCAA considerations in their events as did A&M swim mers Susie Geyer, Denean Knapp, Stacie Karnes, Danee Mastagni and diver Jodi Janssen. “I am very pleased with the results,” Nash said. “We have seven people under considera tion, and I am 95 to 98 percent sure that they will be going.” The team will find out this weekend whether or not they will be traveling to Indianapo lis in March. Lady Ags: SMU next in path to SWC" tourney Continued from Page 7 from her career-high, 16-point performance against Texas Christian University. “Most important to me is to just relax,” Ferguson said. “The last couple of weeks I had been stressed, but Coach Harvey told me to go out and relax.” Ferguson said the confidence she has acquired over the last several games should help her against the Lady Mustangs. “I’ve definitely reached my peak,” Ferguson said. “The confi dence has helped me do my part to help the team.” MSC Town Hall presents INDIGO GIRLS b A S P E C I A 1.
