Leslie O’Neal and Junior Seau will have to make huge contribu tions. Seau had his best game in the AFC Championship game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he will have to have an even better game against a more pro ductive offensive team. • Second, the Charger offense will have to rise from the dead and put up some points in the first half. By points, I mean in denominations of sevens not threes. The Chargers have been absolutely dreadful inside the 20-yard line. A majority of the time the Chargers aren’t able convert the touchdown and end up settling for the field goal. • Third, the Chargers cannot be behind at halftime. In the games against Miami and Pitts burgh, the Chargers were behind at halftime and were able to pull it out in the fourth quarter. The Chargers simply can’t do that against the 49ers, just ask the Cowboys. Down 21-0 after three turnovers, the Cowboys just couldn’t pull it all back together and win. After building big leads early in the game, the 49ers have been absolutely unstoppable. There is a 19-point spread on the game, but the 49ers cannot go into the game thinking that it will be an easy win. San Fran cisco must establish its game early and simply shutdown the Charger offense. Steve Young must put on a MVP performance. He needs to illustrate his versatility as a quarterback by passing to Rice and John Taylor, handing off to Watters and Raymond Floyd and running for the first down if there is no one open to throw to. Simply, he needs to be on fire. In order to have this kind of perfor mance, the offensive line must become impermeable to players such as O’Neal and Seau. Pro tection will be key. Two words, Jerry Rice. Young needs to throw the deep passes to the man that has the most touchdown receptions in NFL history. This year Rice hasn’t re ally gotten that much of chance to show off his stuff be cause of the diversity ofthe49er offense. However reports that he may retire after the SuperBowi should compel the 49er coaching staff to give him the ball as much as possible. Let Rice work his magic. The game should be pretty good in the beginning but if the 49ers get on a roll look out Joe Robbie Stadium. San Francisco* has been so laid back about the game all week and are so confi dent that they could conceivably put up 30 or more points, maybe just in the first half. This Sunday will be the first in a string of championships for the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers will show the league and their owner Eddie DeBartelotha; money shelled out for big free agents in the off-season will be money well spent. Look out Dis neyland. here come the 49ers.
