Respect for both Texas A&M swimming and diving teams is something that is coming with continued success. This year both Aggie teams are ranked in the top 25 even though they lost key members to graduation last year. “Our ultimate goal is to quali fy people for the NCAA champi onships through the conference tournament,” senior freestyler Brian Randall said. The Aggies will have to go against Texas Christian on Fri day while the Lady Aggies face University of Houston on Sat urday in dual meets. The dual meets are structured to incor porate swimming and divingl events into an overall total. “In years past we have! to forfeit the points received fori diving events because we didnil have strong divers,” assistant coach Jay Holmes said. “Howl ever, the divers have gotterl better and better every year! which has been a great benefil| to the entire program.” Diving coach Kevin Wrigh:| said the key to success at thtl collegiate level is the cooperaf tion between the swimmingamj diving teams. “While swimming and divingl are totally different sports anti| are treated as such on the pro fessional level, they both go to ward the same point total atl the collegiate level,” Wrightl said. “For this reason we workl well with the swim team and| support them however we can.’ Kven with the Aggies’ recentl success, Texas and Southerrl Methodist are still the teamsto| beat in the Southwest Confer ! ence. If the Aggies are ableto| get past those teams, they wi start to get that respect. City Council takes slap shot at Stars Q Dallas hockey team holds out on signing lease. DALLAS (AP) — The City Council has threatened legal ac tion if the Dallas Stars, who have been using Reunion Arena under a letter of agreement, do not sign a long-term lease for use of the facility. On Wednesday, council mem bers directed City Attorney Sam Lindsay to tell the team to sign a long-term lease, as city officials say the Stars originally promised to do, or face the city in court. Said Stars President Jim Lites: “I will respond legally. I’m shocked.” The decision came a week ter city leaders expressed anger with the Stars for helping fund a campaign in suburban Lewisville for a sales tax in crease. The half-cent tax in crease, to be voted on Saturday is intended to raise money to build an arena there. The hockey team, which moved to Dallas in 1993, has been excluded from negotiations on a proposed $142 million arena in downtown Dallas because of the team’s refusal to sign a long term lease. Lites said team officials con tributed $5,900 to the Lewisville initiative as “insurance” in case plans fall through for a new are na in Dallas. m st ui wl si< ge Cl wl dr If. pu inf arr tal im me an for slij ani pos en ha st; Sii tin sta wit I cer clu tio hig me abs tice bel am Ci\ bee for 1 me sta- ing gra at i gra ty t a b- an sim fulf 1 the hav few S Ri E spri] brea sorm gone As is case son ’ from attei wha “A “C A&n are j “C Chri W tive < Texa riaem to in< T1 Pus (
