Friday • December 9, 1994 The Battalion • Page 7 ' 7 He sees you when you’re 1-12, he knows you dodge the IRS H e’s making a list. He’s checking it twice. He going to find out who’s been naughty or nice. That’s right, Santa Claus is coming to town and I wonder what the big, red, jolly gift giver will bring with him? I have some ideas. Now I’m not talking about j something little like giving Den nis Rodman a permanent hair color or some sympathy for the Dallas Cowboys who have to wear those gaudy special event uniforms they showed off on Thanksgiving Day. The first assist by the holiday’s all-time gift giver from the North Pole goes to the Houston Oilers. This team hasn’t been naughty, but bad enough that they’ll be able to draft Kerry Collins to take I over the reigns from the three I stooges of former SWC fame. Santa will come up short when dropping off the gifts down the Astrodome chimney. Jimmy Johnson will not be gift wrapped under the goal post. While on the subject of foot ball, Santa will give the Dallas Cowboys and their uniforms two for one coupons good at any Dallas hospital to take care of the many injuries the team has suffered this season. I Bonus stocking stuffers will include free defensive driving classes and third-straight NFL championship rings. For the Dallas Mavericks and Stars, a new state of the art are na filled with luxury boxes and other necessities. Jason Kidd and Mike Madono will both get a new home to display their talents and bring championships home too. Where the arena will be placed is still in the air. The two teams are threatening to move away from the downtown area. To Kyle Field, the gift of grass will be delivered to replace the Astroturf that exists now. The turf is expected to cut down injuries and will probably look better. Expect finalization on the delivery just in time for Big 12 play or at least within three years. Some of the wishes that Santa will commit a turnover on. A peaceful holiday season for Darryl Strawberry. Strawberry had come back to baseball and been a good boy until the IRS found that Strawberry was keep ing a secret, a $300,000 secret. That’s called tax evasion. The NCAA’s bowl system. If Nebraska and Penn State win their bowl games, the argument for the best team in the country will be up to the voters. Of course, the Miami Hurricanes just might beat the Cornhuskers and bring up another argument, why Miami will not be the national champs. Steve Young’s dream to become like Joe. The 49ers have mort gaged the future that they will win their fifth Super Bowl. Too bad they spent good money for all that talent and still will not beat the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC title game (even if it is in Candlestick). Oh well, there are a few Christmas wishes that I have for Texas A&M. I wish that men’s basketball coach Tony Barone gets his basket ball arena in the near future. To get the top talent, he needs a facili ty that he can be proud of to show the recruits. To Danny McCray, I wish you will quit football and stick with track just to see if you are one of the best the Southwest Conference will ever see. You have too much talent to waste. To the fans of A&M athletics, I wish that you will have the wisdom to attend more A&M athletic events. Have a great holiday season and wonderful new year. Break busy for basketball teams By Drew Diener The Battalion Winter vacation? , For the two basketball teams that represent Texas A&M University, it will be business as usual for the ma jority of the holiday season, save the week prior to Christmas Day. “We are hoping we can continue with success,” Lady Aggie head coach Candi Harvey said. “We have a tough three games coming up in the next five days.” After a break during finals, the women resume their season by playing host to the University of Minnesota on December 16. Min nesota was an NCAA Tournament qualifier last season. On December 18, the Lady Aggies travel to Nor man to do battle with last season’s NIT Champions, Oklahoma. To close out their pre-Christmas run, the Lady Aggies will play host to Louisiana State on December 20. “Those'are three games that will answer a lot of questions,” Harvey said. “We feel that our previous games have already an swered some questions.” Ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll, the undefeated Lady Aggies return from an abbreviated Christmas break on December 29 as participants in the Citrus Sports Travel Holiday Classic held in Orlando. “That will be a very tough tour nament,” Harvey said. “We will see perennial NCAA Tournament teams, and it will be good for us.” Following the tournament, the Lady Aggies will play Oklahoma State and Manhattan before battling national power Texas Tech in Lub bock to open the conference season. Harvey said she has been disap pointed with the support her team has been given this year at home. “Every time we take the floor, we need to have the homecourt advan tage,” Harvey said. “We would like to have more folks at G. Rollie White to support us.” After their finals break, the men retake the hardwood December 17 in Montana when they take on a dangerous Montana State team. “Montana State is a key game,” men’s head coach Tony Barone said. “They will have a packed house. Everything we do from this point on becomes a lot more focused because we get closer to the confer ence season.” The Aggies return to G. Rollie White two days later to battle Mc- Neese State before taking a short holiday break. “We have had a lack of concentra tion lately,” Barone said. “It’s not from not trying or hustling. I think we’re doing things too quickly.” Following their Christmas break, the Aggies will participate in the New Orleans Tournament. Princeton, New Orleans, and Rhode Island represent the rest of the tournament field. Freshman guard, Quinton James, shoots a reverse lay-up in Monday’s game against USL.
