Page 8 • The Battalion Faldo takes pro golfs richest prize SUN CITY, South Africa (AP) — Nick Faldo wants no sympa thy for 1994, a year that saw him lose his rating as the world’s best golfer and fail to win a major tournament. Asked if his victory Sunday at the Million Dollar Challenge made the 12 months any better, Faldo grinned and cracked: “Yeah, a million times better." Faldo took home golfs richest first prize — $1 million — along with renewed confidence in his game, particularly the cross handed putting style he adopted in September. “It’s pretty tough to say I've had a rough year after that,” he said of the victory and reward. Most golfers would cherish Faldo’s 1994 performance, when he ranked fourth in the world and won the Alfred Dunhill Open, placed fourth at the PGA Championship, eighth at the British Open and in the top 10 in seven other tournaments. But those results represented a fall for the 37-year-old Englishman who held the top spot in world rankings for a record 77 weeks, until the start of this year. Faldo fired 16 birdies to reach the halfway mark at this tour nament in a record 14-under-par and seven shots ahead of the field. His back-nine 29 on Fri day, with seven birdies, was “the best nine holes I have ever played,” Faldo said. Clippers’ plunge continues LOS ANGELES (AP)-The Los Angeles Clippers fell to 0 16, one loss shy of matching the NBA’s worst start ever, and set a franchise record with their 20th consecutive defeat Mon day night as the Charlotte Hor nets routed them 115-83. If the Clippers lose at home to Milwaukee on Wednesday, they will match the 0-17 start of the expansion Miami Heat in 1988. That slump ended with a victory against the Clippers. Larry Johnson scored 18 points and Hersey Hawkins added 17 for the Hornets, who are 8-4 since their 0-3 start and have surrendered fewer than 100 points in a club-record sev en straight games. Hawkins powered Charlotte to a 37-22 lead through one quarter with 11 points. The Clippers, who placed backup center Elmore Spencer on the injured list before the game as a result of personal problems and his erratic emotional be havior, got as close as 10 points with seven minutes left in the first half. But they never got closer as the Hornets broke it open with a 13-2 run fueled by two 3-point ers by Hawkins and opened up an 83-56 lead with 25 seconds left in the third quarter. Lamond Murray scored 14 points for Los Angeles. Dallas sets sights above NFC East IRVING (AP) — Three con secutive NFC East champi onships don’t mean much to the Dallas Cowboys. A third consecutive Super Bowl victory is all that will make them celebrate. “Winning the NFC East didn't make us jump around,” wide re ceiver Michael Irvin said. “We don’t want a pat on the back un til we win another Super Bowl. We have to do anything we can to get a third ring. We don’t want to look back in 10 years and re gret we didn’t give it our all.” Dallas beat Philadelphia 31- 19 on Sunday to stretch its over all record to 11-2. It was the 16th division championship in club history and gave the Cowboys a 21-6 all-time record in games af ter Thanksgiving. “This ain’t that special,” offen sive guard Nate Newton said. “Super Bowls are special.” Safety Darren Woodson, who returned an interception 94 yards for a touchdown to put the Eagles away, said the Cowboys were unemotional after the victo ry because they had anticipated winning the division.
