NOTICE TO ALL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION 1. WE ARE MOVING TO THE NEW WEHNER BUILDING ON DECEMBER 19TH. We’re sorry for the inconvenience, but no advisors will be available on that day. New Location of Undergraduate Programs Office: *T ’ 209 Wehner Building at West Campus (see map) New Phone Number: 862-3850 GATESVILLE, Texas — Sev eral decades ago they were re ferred to as “passion pits” and a place “nice girls” would never go on a first date. But Audie Palmer, owner of what is thought to be Texas’ last drive-in movie theater operating year-round, said the Gatesville Drive-In does not have the grop ers of yesteryear. “I don’t think that’s the kind of people who are coming to dri ve-ins anymore,” Palmer said. “We run a lot of family-type movies, so we predominantly get the families. We have some cou ples who come out, but I don’t think that they are doing any thing out there. People come out here to watch the movies.” Gatesville Drive-In, located on state Highway 36, may be the last of a dying breed. Gene Palmer, who bought the drive-in in 1965 and turned the opera tion over to his son in 1990, said the number of drive-ins remain ing in Texas could be counted on ohe hand. “There aren’t too many of them left,” the elder Palmer said. “I checked with some peo ple who keep up with theaters a couple of years ago and they said there were only three or four left that operate year- round.” He said there were 300 drive- ins in Texas when the Gatesville Drive-In opened in 1950, includ ing two in Bell County. He should know. Gene Palmer was a charter employee of the Gatesville Drive-In. “When it first opened, I helped direct traffic,” he said. “But after people started to learn how things operated, they didn’t need me anymore.” It could be said that Gene Palmer’s job as a lot attendant set the stage for the rest of his life. He is still in the film indus try, selling first-run movies to theaters across Texas. “I don’t know, (movies and film) are something that I’ve al ways enjoyed,” Gene Palmer said. “So maybe that was instru mental in getting me involved, but I can’t really say.” There’s a reason the Gatesville Drive-In may be the last of a dying breed. There isn’t a strong market for drive-ins these days and Audie Palmer has felt the sting of technology. “I think that a lot of it has to do with cable television and home videos,” he said. “I don’t really think that many people are going to the indoor theaters, I think that people are just stay ing at home to watch movies these days.” 2. Government to announce plat to protect endangered species AUSTIN (AP) — Federal of- ficials are preparing to an nounce a plan that would re vive a seven-year effort to set aside thousands of acres for en dangered species and ease re strictions on development in other habitat. The forthcoming proposal is widely regarded as a last-ditch effort to save the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Plan, which has been stalled since Travis County voters re fused in November 1993 to au thorize a $49 million bond issue for land acquisition. The plan —- under discus sion for about seven years — would preserve 29,000 acres of habitat for rare animals and plants and free up other habi tat for development. “I certainly hope this one meets with success,” Austan Li- brach, the city’s director of en vironmental and conservation services, told the Austin Ameri- can-Statesman. “We’re out of energy and out of solutions and out of resources.” The plan could be unveiled this month, said Mary Helen Thompson/ a spokeswoman for Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt. Babbitt emerged from a series of meetings on June 11 vowing to revive the Balcones plan and pledging to return repeatedly to Austin for discussions. However, he has not returns for such talks, and some develop ers say they’re concemed ate being left out of the process. Sam Hamilton, Texas stati administrator for the Interio Department’s Fish and Wik® Service, said the agency has ns ignored the views of developed and environmentalists. “Our strategy was to si', down with all those groups £ the front end, take their inpiil and try to craft something th we felt would be a good compr. mise,” he said. Although his group has ns been consulted in recen months, Dick Kallerman, chair man of the Austin Sierra Ci£ said he is pleased Babbitt hai not given up. Babbitt’s interest in a: ecosystem approach to protei: ing the area’s rare songbird cave bugs, spring-dwelling sak manders and wildflowers both personal and political. He lived in Austin for abet a year after graduating fre' Harvard Law School and te fond memories of exploring I - Hill Country. In addition, b wants a major victory unit the Endangered Species A (i which is expected to be tacked by the Republican^ Congress next year. Student Counseling 4\n you a good listener?
