Jay Schroeder led an offense that hadn’t scored a touchdown in nine quarters to set the early tone and then defense took over with five interceptions and a fumble re covery for a 30-12 victory over the Houston Oilers on Sunday. The Oilers, with Ryan as the de fensive coordinator, won 11 games in a row and finished last season 12-4. They’ve dropped to the bot tom this season with a 1-12 record and nine losses in a row. Ryan’s victorious return net ted the Cardinals (6-7) their biggest scoring output of the season and kept their slim play off chances alive. Georgandis Continued from Page 7 dead of a drug overdose? Another Steve Olin/ Tim Crews nightmare that left the two young pitchers dead and Bob Ojeda dealing with horrible emotions? I don’t know the answer to that question, and quite frankly, I don’t want to know. Hopefully, the sports world will be tragedy-free for a long, long time. I’ve al ways used sports as a release from the stress of the every day world. But over the years, it’s been tougher and tougher to look past the the bad to enjoy the good. Those few isolated incidents involving an athlete suddenly became a monthly or even a weekly incident. With drug problems, Dwight Gooden, Steve Howe and Roy Tarpley all cheated themselves of some measure of greatness with their illegal addictions. Drunk driving took Billy Martin’s life, another car accident almost killed Bobby Hurley. What is the sense in this, what is the reason? That’s the scary part, I just don’t know. istmas WASH gures p firmamen elect ii Irme dion M ley as from Dela | Armey fclay’s tr ice give slots in iliierarchy implement He shoots. He scores! Start with Emmitt Smith, who carried 25 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cowboys over the Philadelphia Eagles 31-19 Sunday. Toss in Michael Irvin, who had 117 yards and a touchdown on four receptions — including a falling-down catch that covered 46 yards — and it’s not difficult to understand why the Cowboys (11-2) were able to hand the Ea gles their fourth straight loss. It was Dallas’ 14th successive NFC East victory. The Eagles (7-6) rallied when Randall Cunningham's second touchdown pass of the game cut the Dallas lead to 24 19 in the fourth quarter. But after a 49-yard punt re turn by Jeff Sydner gave Philadelphia the ball on the Cowboys’ 12, Darren Woodson intercepted Cunningham's pass and ran it back 94 yards for the touchdown that sealed the victory.
