To Place Your Ad In 111 The Battalion Call 845-2696 ».|.i -TO—- .U.nUl—m Page 8 “ The Battalion Tuesday • November 29,199i Southern Cal Trojans to face Tech in Cotton Bowl DALLAS (AP) — The Trojans of Southern California will make their 37th bowl appear ance and first in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2. The Trojans beat out Arizona (8-3, 6-2) for the spot opposite Southwest Conference represen tative Texas Tech because of their greater name appeal, bowl officials said. “Arizona has a better record, but Southern Cal beat Arizona head up pretty badly this season. For that reason, we think Southern Cal will be a better matchup,” Cot ton Bowl president John Crawford said. A potentially higher televi sion rating for a game including a team from the massive Cali fornia market also was a factor, he added. “We’re excited because this will be just the third time we’ve had a Pac-10 team. The first was Oregon in 1949 and then UCLA in ’89 with Troy Aikman. And now we have Southern Cal. Considering our future re lationship, it’s good to have a Pac-10 team.” Beginning next season, the Cotton Bowl will match either the Pac-10 runnerup of the Western Athletic Conference champion against the runnerup of either the Big Eight or South west Conference. Once the Big 12 begins play in the 1996 season, with four addi tions from the SWC, the Big 12 runnerup will replace the Big EighVSWC runnerup as the host team in the bowl at Dallas. The Trojans (7-3-1, 6-2) tied Arizona for second place in the Pac-10 after last Saturday’s 17- 17 tie with Notre Dame. USC will be only the third Pac-10 team to play in the Cot ton Bowl. UCLA with Troy Aik man at quarterback beat Arkansas 17-3 in 1989, and the Oregon Ducks with Norm Van Brocklin at quarterback lost to Southern Methodist and Doak Walker 21-13 in 1949. Tech’s only appearance in the Cotton Bowl was a 20-13 loss to St. Mary’s in 1939 when the Red Raiders weren’t an SWC member. Tech (6-5) fin ished in a five-way tie for the SWC title with Rice, Baylor, Texas Christian and Texas. Texas A&M finished with at undefeated record but wasineli gible for a bowl game. “We’re very excited about being able to play the Univer sity of Southern California,! team with great tradition ami certainly a national reputa tion,” Tech athletic directoi Bob Bockrath said. “We loot forward to the opportunityta compete with them.” “We’ll be playing a gooi opponent in Texas Tech,”Tro jans coach John Robinson said. “It’s a good situation for out team. It’s a chance to playia another game, and it will bf good for our young players It get in the extra work andplai in a bowl.” Tech coach Spike Dykes was deer hunting on Monday and couldn’t be reached for comment. Four SWC teams will be in bowls. T h e Sun Bow! picked North Carolina to face Texas (I- 4) Dec. 30 in the Sur, Bowl in El Paso, the Alamo Bowl picked Washingtor State to play Baylor (7-4) on Dec. 31 in San Antonio, and the Inde pendence Bowl picked Virginiato play TCU (7-4) on Dec. 28ia Shreveport. USC became the Cotton Bowl’s pick after Notre Dame decided to go to the Fiesta Bow! and Florida State hooked fip with the Sugar Bowl to play ei ther Alabama or Florida. It will be Miami against Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. USC has 23 bowl victories, second only to Alabama’s 26. “We’re happy to have four teams in the bowl games,” said SWC commissioner Steve Hatchell. “It was importantto get a fourth bowl. We had a great exciting year and this helps climax it.” There was some intrigue in volving the Alamo and Indepen dence bowls. TCU received and accept' r its invitation from the Ini pendence Bowl on Saturday, much to the dismay of Alamo Bowl officials.
