Newly constructed monument marks former governor’s grave AUSTIN — They wanted to remember him in death as he was in life. So, the first thing you notice about former Texas Gov. John Connally’s recently erected ceme tery monument is the commanding height. It’s tall and strong, and the shiny black granite draws immediate attention. “I wanted it to be (like) John Connally was, and I think maybe it is,” said Nellie Connally, the former Texas first lady, who was married to Connally for 53 years. “It would be hard for me to describe John Connally without 29 adjectives. He was a very strong man, but he was a very compassionate one.” The grave of Connally, who died June 15, 1993, is under a live oak tree on a gentle hillside in the Texas State Cemetery in East Austin.
